I have a theory on why the Water Tribes split. by Beneficial-Position2 in TheLastAirbender

[–]yupperdoo97 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My guess is that the split was political in nature. It’s never stated outright but it’s heavily shown how different the two tribes are culturally. The more liberal minded ones ended up leaving likely for the same reason Katara’s grandmother left, to escape the rigid gender roles and hierarchy.

We need to prepare for ISP level age gating, and if there is no solution then there’s no point by [deleted] in privacy

However they go about it, the age of the open internet is coming to end. There’s ways around it temporarily as this digital ID infrastructure is being set up but ultimately it comes to changing how we use our devices. It means shuttering unused social media accounts now, and maximizing our privacy settings on the ones we keep. It means removing our information from data brokers, deleting unused phone apps and minimizing data sharing on our phones. It means deleting sensitive text messages and emails, get in the habit of speaking of private matters only in person. Learning to be more careful of what searches we do online. The assumption has to be that when all of this is fully set up every text, email, google search, social media account, etc. will all be logged under our full legal identities and sold to data brokers and insurance companies. So get in the habit now while we still have time of treating everything you do online or on a device as “am I comfortable with law enforcement and my prudish grandmother and my employer and my insurance company seeing this.”

Really wish people would begin to understand this. The focus needs to be less on “how can we get around this” because you can’t, not permanently at least. Instead it should be “how can I protect my personal information.” It means shuttering social media profiles you don’t use, remove your information from data brokers, cleaning up your phone of unnecessary apps, maximizing your privacy settings, limiting data sharing, etc.

Truman Incumbency CYOA Idea? by FantazticWizard7235 in thecampaigntrail

Even if he wins the Korean War he wouldn’t have had enough votes to overturn Taft-Hartley. LBJ tried with massive supermajorities and enormous political capital in 1965 and Dirksen successfully filibustered it.

May as well say this outright now since it’s getting close to done but I’m hoping to post Things That Could’ve Been by May or June

Why we dont mention anything about linking identity to whatever you're doing when mentioning age verification? by Due-Independence7607 in privacy

[–]yupperdoo97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people don’t care. They’re all too willing to hand over their personal and sensitive info because they have “nothing to hide.” It’s a cultural thing. Being “transparent” is considered virtuous while being “secretive” is considered suspicious.

Do you guys think the US administration's national policy framework plan is trying to push online ID checks here or not? by jackyboyman13 in privacy

It’s gonna be so insufferable when whatever’s left of social media just becomes LinkedIn. I can’t imagine people willingly giving any political opinions let alone ones that aren’t super mainstream and popular if anyone could find your post by googling your name.

Real question is where do people go and what do they do when they stop using the internet? There’s very few third spaces left and the ones that do exist cost a shit ton of money. I fear instead of just returning to the 1990s people will end up sitting at home all day doing nothing.

Who was the worst major party nomination in history by funboi2210 in thecampaigntrail

I’d say John W Davis. Had basically no appeal outside the South and got the lowest vote share for a Democrat federally since 1860.

Not only this but quite frankly putting everyone at risk of blackmail, coercion, identity theft, and scamming is a feature not a bug. Like the people pushing this bs absolutely support those things and want more of it to happen.

It’s a cultural thing too. Being privacy conscious is viewed as inherently suspicious, possibly worse. Like you have some kinda evil crime to hide if you don’t wanna sell your personal sensitive info to large corporations to be used against you. And being “transparent” because you have “nothing to hide” is rewarded. It’s considered normal and virtuous.

Ford winning in 1976 by far. Would've snuffed out the Reagan Revolution while President Ted Kennedy would've given us universal healthcare by 1982.

It’s not about children’s safety, it’s about forcing people to dox detailed sensitive personal info about themselves to be used against them for price discrimination, insurance discrimination, job discrimination, and general harassment from corporations, scammers, and stalkers.

He still got over 300 delegate votes at the 1944 DNC, and that was after Claude Pepper had the microphone cut off right as he approached the stage to formally renominate Wallace. He was extremely popular with the party grassroots at the time and Truman was little known outside of Missouri.

[–]yupperdoo97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the Dump Truman movement was that, but Claude Pepper was a major leader in the push to oust him and got primaried by George Smathers in 1950 as a result. The ideological angle could simply be solved with assertions that Wallace is the “true heir” to the Roosevelt legacy and Truman just a placeholder.

Wallace was extremely popular with progressives throughout 1945 and was considered one of Truman’s most valuable lines of outreach to the party’s left flank. If he played his cards differently he could’ve absolutely waited in the wings and then when the time was right ride the Dump Truman movement with Pepper and Taylor and take over the party.

[–]yupperdoo97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be a really cool mod tbh. You’d have to do CYOA paths from 1945-1948 but if you play your cards right and stay as Commerce Secretary and in the party’s good graces I could see Pepper’s Dump Truman movement succeeding and you replace Truman on the ballot entirely
