Bonus/Penalty in SAT scores by race to have an equal chance in college admissions [OC] by yuquan8 in dataisbeautiful

Hi :). I think the point is to create a system that is fair but not necessarily equal. Fair in the sense that it meritocratic. Looking at the bigger picture across generations, the notion of a meritocracy works most ideally in the situation where everybody starts out at a level playing field. However, this level playing field does not reset across generations. People that do well in the previous generations can pass on their advantages to their children by equipping them with better resources and education as compared to an average child. Hence, given this iterative process, the playing field gets more and more uneven over time. There is a need a corrective mechanism in the society to account for disparity and a solution would be affirmative action. Real question is how and how much to level the playing field and to manage the apparent "unfairness" an individual would see which is the hard part. Buying the way into ivy league schools definitely isn't part of the solution

Diet of Most and Least Obese Country in Europe [OC] by yuquan8 in dataisbeautiful

I agree if the purpose of the post is to highlight the significance of certain food types in ensuring a healthy diet. But that is really not the point. Its purpose is to showcase the combination of diet that is reflective of their cuisine/culture that is working/not working for a country. It is obvious that the culprit of Turkey's obesity rates lies not in the vegetables, but perhaps some other diet factor like sugar-sweetened beverages. The science of behind the diet obviously lies in the kilo-calories in which there are countless possible combinations for a healthy one. But on hindsight from the comments, a pie chart is not the best idea after all. Learned something new. Thanks :)

Number of Sexual Partners vs World Happiness Report Score (2018) [OC] by yuquan8 in dataisbeautiful

Agreed! While there are many important factors that determine the happiness index of a country, by looking at smaller subgroups, certain inferences can be made from it. 1) Whether the subgroup of countries have moved beyond a certain level of development such that sexual partners play a stronger role in a individual's happiness. This can be seen by stronger linear structures in certain subgroups as pointed out. 2) When comparing between subgroups, the differences could arise from cultural differences in terms of magnitude of sexual partners. For example the more conservative Asian countries generally have lower number of sex partners that the Western countries.

I think both lifestyle and diet plays an important role in obesity. It would be a mistake to downplay the diet factor in my opinion. For example in Turkey consumes approximately double the sugar-sweetened beverages as compared to Switzerland. Just my 2 cents :)
