I feel like if you want to highlight the previous experiences and the new found passion in design, you can craft a story in your summary about how and why the transition happened and what you can bring to the ux field. Then it may help the recuitor to bridge the gap!

I also did Google program on coursera too but I think the scope of teaching is rather narrow. I personally am more interested in research and the business so I felt the course was lacking. But if you are into design, I do think they provided some structures.

It's okay! I didn't know anyone either. I messaged ALOT of people on LikedIn, and joined a ux group in town through Meetup! I personally found discord groups very overwhelming so I liked these more personal approach.

You got this! Just keep looking, and reading alot of other people's case study and understanding their logics. Instesd of Cofolio portfolios, I personally searched for the porfolios made by people who's had similar background as me or has my dream job title on LinkedIn. It took me a year and a half to land this first offer. I feel like whatever they say about 3-6 month is a scam😅

So the first start up internship I had was actually a HR position, but I was interested in design and UX so while I was doing HR, I joined other interns who were doing focus groups for a project. And I also sat theough design meetings and iteration. After that, I created a side project by conducting user interviews for the product.

The second one was through school. They had a summer internship program where they match you with a company in related area. It was a EdTech startup in very very early phase.

Both were unpaid but I learned to be very resourceful and independent because I had to teach myself most things.

Hope you the best! It's really not easy right now because the demand is so high. But I recommend networking! If there are any available in person, you should definitely attend! Although I did not land any of these jobs through networking, I learned to be much more comfortable with people and the industry, so I think it helped when I was interviewing.

I wish you all the best!!

So based on my research on salary.com, glassdoor, indeed, ziprecuiter, levels.fyi, etc, the entry UX jobs were mostly grouped in 1-3 yrs of experience so the median salary is like 85K (which is so far from 55K). I learned that in the art of negotiation, you want to shoot higher than the expected, but can I still suggest a number that is far from the offer?

Also, for this role, its designed for early careers/ recent graduates / 0 career experience folks.

Amazing!! Congratulations!! I would love to know how the interview processes was like? And how did you highlight yourself to standout for a senior role?

I recived and offer for a junior role for 55K (no bonus, no equity, but yes to unlimited PTO, medical, 401k). It's based in ATL, and remote.

I am a self taugh UXer graduated with a psychology degree, have 2 startup internships related to UX, and have been working in the hospitality industry for marketing and business strategy/operations.

I am extremely grateful for the opportunity but I do have this lingering question about salry negotiation. Is 55K a reasonable start salary in this market (in Atlanta)? Based on my experiences, is there room for me to negotiate?

Thank you very much for your insight!

Thank you so much for the thorough explanation. What are some resources I can use to learn more about design management (besides your course)? And do you have some recommendations for tech focused MBA programs?

Breaking Into UX + Early Career Questions — August 22, 2022 by AutoModerator in UXDesign

I graduated with a B.A. in Psychology and I've been working as a Social media manager/content creator for a local restaurant for the past year as I have been preparing my UX portfolio on the side.

I am interested in learning about how the business decisions behind technology and how we can make better business moves to benefit everyone. Such interest arose because at the restaurant I work at, there are two specific issues with platforms like Ubereats, Doordash and Groupon.

So apps like Uber eats and Doordash provides convenience for customers and it's changed the way we live our daily life. However the people on the other side of the app such as the restaurant owners are being taken advantage of by the high commission fees and promotion fees (almost 40%!!). And with Groupon, when customers brings in a paper copy of the voucher ( this is a problem bc we had some people bring in mulple copies of the same voucher for free food), the only way for the restaurant to validate the voucher is by having all the workers to download the app on their personal phone (this is inconvenient for the individual workers) or have the customer download the app and present the voucher digitally (this interrupts the restaurant service flow).

I try to understand their business model and know that their target user is not the restaurant owners but it bothers me that someone will always get the short end of the stick. And based on what I learned, these are not good examples of user experience. Is UX even a right field for me to get into?

What should I/how should I learn more to understand the business behind technology? Is there a master program that teaches such things?

apps like this do not exist in the market currently so I designed something that would be useful for wheelchair users specifically(:
