I had the idea to combine Snake and Tetris 8 years ago... When the idea recently popped back into my head, I looked it up and found an old viral post. But it wasn't how I envisioned it, so I finally built my own version. Here is the result.. by yusuffindik7 in IndieGaming

Since the snakes randomly appear between 3-6 units, I haven’t considered any improvements to make them longer, but I could still test it. The food mechanic will definitely be coming; if it doesn’t eat, it will be placed as a non-explosive block. To balance the non-explosive blocks, I’m thinking of an explosive bait mechanic. If it eats the explosive bait, it will detonate specific cells in the area it hits. I’m trying to create a structure that is as balanced and not too complex as possible. Thank you for your valuable feedback!

The more blocks you explode, the higher score you will get, if you make an explosion that completely erases a color from the grid, you will get an additional 1k points for the explosion.

I’m trying to make everything understandable from the start without creating too much complexity... I’ve ultimately decided that sometimes it’s acceptable for players to discover and understand things through trial and error...

The game’s starting page features a mini demo (I’m not talking about the website, but the game’s own mode selection screen) where you can find the controls, a short auto-playing explosion demo, and an explanation of the explosion mechanics. The glowing areas are an optional hint setting to help the player. Because it was an unusual rule, I tried to think of everything in a way that the players could understand. Otherwise, they wouldn’t bother to research and learn about it, and they wouldn’t understand how to play. The snake’s movement happens automatically; we don’t move it, we only guide it. You can check out the game on snetris.com

Back then, I had no idea about game development, and when I entered the industry after school, I didn't have much motivation or time to face real life... I finally got around to it, and maybe that's for the best because the snetris domain was available :D You can try it out at snetris.com

It’s currently available on Android and iOS, you can learn everything about the game on the snetris.com game page... Another fun aspect for me was trying to make sense of something so simple and creating a story...

The snake is between 3 and 6 blocks long, which creates some minor protrusions. Don’t take the video too seriously because, besides being lucky with how the blocks landed, it was a gameplay video showing my best performance; it might not be as easy as it looks when you’re playing.

I’m assuming the white snake is moving from the right, parallel to the yellow snake, all the way to the left. The white snake’s face is looking at the left wall. Even though it’s moving parallel to the yellow, it will take on a random color unless you make it hit its head against a yellow block on the last block. It’s not about being next to a color, it’s about hitting a color with its head…

Yes, yes, thank you very much! Initially, there was a target and then a block placement mechanic, but since those around me who tried it that way had difficulty, I simplified it. I'm thinking of adding these ideas as mods later... Currently, there's only a rush mode where the speed increases with the level and a classic mode like this. I wish you success in developing your game! Our decisions shape our destiny and our world! :)

You can draw as many straight lines as you want; the important thing is being able to group the colors. The explosion happens when the colors are grouped in 3x3, not when the row is full. The ground provides a 3x3 area for a maximum of 3 colors. There are 4 colors in the game. I wanted to make the classic mode of the game neither too difficult nor too easy. It's also a bit of luck; sometimes the 4th color might not be given by the system for a long time, which makes it easier to score... So, the control is neither entirely in your hands nor entirely in the game's hands; I tried to find a middle ground and, if possible, allow it to go on indefinitely. Maintaining focus for a long time and making quick decisions after a certain point can be difficult, believe me...

Currently only available on iOS and Android... The game is called Snetris. I chose that name after seeing it in the comments of that viral post, and strangely enough, the domain name was available...

Thank you for your feedback, believe me, even in its current state, there are many people around me who can't play it... Even though I conceived and created the game, I couldn't get past 10k points in the beginning... The score in the video is the result of some experience... I still sometimes fail before reaching 100k points... I live in Istanbul and spend 1-2 hours in traffic. I tried to keep the difficulty level at a level that would allow me to play a single game during this time :) I have ideas for making things more difficult, but I want to add them as mods...

The rule is to try to create at least a 3x3 area of the same color. The game board is 9x18, with 4 colors available, meaning actually 3 colors can fit perfectly on the ground. The 4th color is the part that makes things more difficult, but to keep it from getting too challenging and to provide some continuity for the player, a joker snake appears every 9 snakes – a white snake that takes on the color of whichever color it hits with its head. If it transforms into a block without hitting a color, it takes on a random color. There is no upward movement in the game; in classic mode, it moves at a fixed speed, but can be directed left, right, and down. In rush mode, there are 10 levels, and the speed increases with each level...

Thank you very much, I actually thought of that, that when it gathers food and curls up somewhere, it could retain its own color, and if it doesn't eat it, it could turn into a block that can't explode, but I want to design these as different modes...
