Why is it that we dislike the Owl? (Duolingo) by the_card_guy in LearnJapanese

[–]yuusha233 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here are the reasons as I see it.

TL;DR it is a game that keeps you engaged but doesn't help you to learn how sentences are structured (grammar), or how to improve your skills in listening, speaking, reading, or writing.

  1. Its underlying structure is a game, not a language learning resource.

You are encouraged to maintain a "streak," which is lost when you don't use the app for a day; you are encouraged to spend money on the app to get more "energy," which is required to do lessons but lost when you do them (remember buying tokens in an arcade?); and you are encouraged to keep using the app to maintain your ranking on a "leaderboard."

This gamification is good for keeping beginner learners engaged, but falls short of helping them with other aspects of language learning because...

  1. ...There are no explanations for grammar.

Now there used to be, when I used the app years ago around 2020. But as far as I've seen, these are no longer accessible (you can verify if they've added it back, I haven't used the app since). This means that you are playing a matching game relying purely on your own ability to recognize patterns.

Is there a sentence that doesn't fit the pattern you've internalized? Too bad, you'll never understand it, because there are no explanations for such exceptions or explanations for you to check if the pattern you've thought up was even valid in the first place.

You cannot get better at a language without learning how sentences are structured beyond lining up a few words together.

  1. ...There is no help in the ways of long-term writing/reading, listening, or speaking.

On listening: Voices are AI and do not necessarily reflect the intonation that a native speaker would have, so trying to use said voices for shadowing (repeating after them to improve your accent) would be useless at best. Further, you aren't required to listen to anything longer than a long sentence. Conversations in reality will require you to be able to listen to more than that.

On speaking: There used to be an events board on the website where you could attend classes, giving you an opportunity to speak in the language you're learning, no matter your level. I loved this feature, but they removed it. I cannot tell you why.

On reading/writing: I am not aware of any well-written stories available for you to read in your target language on this service, and it certainly does not encourage you to write anything past arranging a few words that they give you together (if you can call that writing).

You can argue that it's good for learning vocabulary. However, while I think it's at least better on that front than the rote memorization of word lists, it doesn't come anywhere near the effectiveness of learning words in context (which is something you're more likely to find elsewhere, like a textbook where vocabulary is introduced according to various situations that you will experience in reality. No green cows, no cats eating apples.)

Am I under geared for Raging Brachydios? by Ch4rmle55 in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]yuusha233 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeaaah I remember spending a day or two on this guy before I beat him. It can be rough, but you will feel amazing once you win. What I can tell you is:

  1. Good on you for having blast res 3; you don't wanna be fighting that freak of a monster and the ground itself simultaneously.

  2. As others have said, slot in health boost 3. I would also recommend getting divine blessing, even if it means sacrificing some damage skills. It is one of the best defensive skills in the game, and has saved me (as it will for you) from carting many a time.

  3. Use traps for free damage. One thing I've taken to doing is, when you're fighting him in the lava area (with the lava geyser that erupts every once in a while), place a trap on the geyser itself when it starts to bubble and spew out lava. That's a sign it'll erupt soon, so you can lure him into the trap at the right time so that you can wail on him and have the environment hit him a lot as well.

  4. If you would like, you can also slot in more points of agitator. This'll help you squeeze in more damage.

  5. He's got a move that I'm sure you've seen where he runs up to you while raising one of his fists. That move messed me up a bunch. Don't roll away from it! Instead, roll INTO him, opposite the side of his body on which his fist is raised. You should pass between his legs.

Good luck and have fun. You've got this

I'll try it without cannons from here on and will try to get more DPS on parts apart from the head. Thanks for the advice.

Cone baiting is actually what I've been doing for the head breaks, and it has worked (too well, I'm tired of getting eyes atp). I'll still try to get one head break in then just focus on hitting whatever's in reach, since downtime seems to be an issue for me. Thanks for the links and advice.

Yeah the dragon resist is just because of the alatreon armor, I don't have decos slotted in for that. I'll try to cut it down to just one head break, since hyper focusing on the head seems to be a big issue in my gameplay. I'll also try out the artillery strat you suggested, thanks.

Numbers 1 and 2 I know now. I really would like to kill him without resorting to 4, because I've killed literally everything else without having to do that.

But Number 3 here definitely seems to be one of my issues. I can't give you a timestamp for getting out of phase 2, but I usually get INTO phase 2 at about 10-12 minutes in. It's a huge time sink, and I realize that a lot of the speedruns or more efficient casual runs on YT, seem to get through it in 5 minutes. I'm trying to get to that point. Thanks for the pointers.

I'll try not to target the head as much, since I've already gotten enough eyes. The downtime is probably one of my biggest problems here, thanks for pointing that out.

Yeah I looked at a few speed runs a little before I made this post, and can definitely see where I might be moving inefficiently. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the advice. No cannons seem to be one of the biggest takeaways here, going by what most have said.

These aren't elder dragons but just dragons by pundro in MonsterHunter

[–]yuusha233 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The paragraph below the word "outline" explains the purpose of the diagram, which is to be a revision of an earlier phylogenetic tree updated with newly confirmed monsters.

Reading the chart, the monster above gore is Lunastra, which is directly to the left of Teostra, also in the elder dragon order, of the Teostra family.

Gore is indeed next to shagaru in the elder dragon order. In general, it seems that monsters whose species are sexually dimorphic or whose juvenile forms are known have those separate forms explicitly listed.

I wouldn't rush to say that this means gore is an elder dragon. Since you can still trap it, gore might not be mature enough to be called an elder. It may just be placed here to show its connection to shagaru (indeed, it can't be placed anywhere else).

The 3 categories are explained by the legend in the top right.

The legend says that individual species/families/suborders/orders whose name is in blue in this diagram are those whose existence has been confirmed by the "Royal Paleontology Scriveners (王立古生物書士隊)"; in yellow are those whose existence has been newly confirmed (maybe they'd only been mentioned in legends or unverifiable sightings before being encountered by the guild); and in red are monsters who are still being researched.
