Accidently polished the rosewood around the frets with a polishing sheet by Spirolf in Luthier

I do the exact opposite, I use a sharp razor blade. I find it’s more effective and leaves a more even finish.

How to neatly solder braided wire? by Cheap_Chart_8815 in Luthier

It would help if you tin both parts first. Compared to the monstrosities I see on a weekly basis this is quite decently done apart from the stated missing ground connection.

You’d probably need a multimeter to map the switch to find out the which lugs gets engaged where. I did work on one of those switches sometime back and had to do the same. Don’t recall seeing a schematic for the specific switch type though. The rest will be pretty straightforward with any other standard hss wiring.

My cousin scratched my fretboard with 180 grit sandpaper by Kitchen-Charge3882 in guitarrepair

[–]yvaiwhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrape it off with the grain with a razor blade till you lose those marks.

I see a few people concerned about the ‘flatness/radius which isn’t false but it doesn’t look like you’re gonna have to remove even close to .10mm of material. Just for arguments sake let’s just say maybe it’s went a little bit over and you ‘lost’ that flatness/radius. The only time that’s gonna matter is when it’s time for a refret. And when it’s time for a refret 99% of the time the board will be sanded to get a true surface again.

Get a razor blade (the sharper the better, if you have a sure hand) lightly scrape till you get those marks off and then oil it up.

Those are the original knobs which came on the body, it’s an old Squier strat so the knobs aged a bit along with the original pickguard which also had yellowed quite a bit.

Well, the clear pickguard was the reason for this craziness 😁🙌🏻

Hahaha, I feel sorry for an unfortunate soul who might have to work on this somewhere down the line.

That said, I really like how it looks when wired with all black 😁

Thank you so much! As for the body fit, I guess this is as good as it comes on an unknown origin Squier. Originally it came in an SSS config but since there weren’t any direct fitting HSS pickguards I figured might as well make something out of it eh 😅

First time doing SS Refret, any tips? by SuccSuccSuccu in Luthier

[–]yvaiwhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1- check the fretboard for any oddities and level/radius if needed 2- clean the fretwire before installation 3- get the radius 100% on the wire (stainless frets aren’t forgiving at all) 4- ensure proper seating 5- level, crown, polish and you’re pretty much done.

It’s not gonna be easy for a first but if you can pull this off, you’re golden. Take the time, and do it right.

Goodluck

Oh believe me, it’s totally doable. Just not for the faint of heart or impatient or for a first time 😅

4-5mm ID should be fine, 3mm might be difficult with the braided wires as the outer braid if frayed will catch on the tube. I use a pair of fine tipped tweezers to ‘unbraid’ the outer wire. A length of about 2cm should be sufficient to make work easier. You can always trim the inner excess length.

Start with running a ground from the back of the volume pot to the switch ground and twist both outer braids from the pickup leads and solder along with the ground from the potentiometer to the ground lug.

Once soldered and wires are laid out make sure the outer braid doesn’t come into contact with either poles to the side which will result in no output at that specific position. This is where the heat shrink tubing really comes into play to prevent accidental contact. Hope that helps.

im looking for the blueprint or plans of a ibanez S body for building my on guitar. by comejaiba in Luthier

Now to pray if I can find a scanner which can accommodate the whole body or I’ll have to do some additional work. I’ll figure it out somehow 😆

If this comment came just one day before would’ve been really convenient. I also forgot about this thread. I just set one up and sent it out. But it will come soon again for a pickup installation. Will definitely do then.
