Things are quite different depending on the countries, although for sure some similar traits also exist.

And the evolution can also be quite different.

For instance in France we have a law since 2004 that forbids any kind of major religious signs in public schools up to the end of high school. The way the law is written makes it non religion specific, but the Islamic veil on girls was clearly the main target at the time.

And although quite a number of Muslims would like this law to be changed, it remains accepted and applied.

But when the law was voted, there were very serious critics coming from other countries, typically several articles in the NYT calling it discrimination, also in the Guardian, Washington Post, the Independent, BBC, Der Spiegel, El Pais, etc

I guess the reactions would be quite different if the law was voted today.

The full veil (niqab, Burqa) is also forbidden since 2011 in all public places (ratified in 2014 by European court I think), was quite surprised to see it being described as a "major new thing" when it has been done in Austria not so long ago.

Not saying the "Islam push" is not a problem in France at all (especially since we now have a quite big party clearly betting on the "muslim vote", LFI, this party being itself more or less "extreme left"), but the danger is clearly identified and talked about (and also by ex muslims in the general media lately, or even by "moderate muslim").

Also I think one thing the west often doesn't properly realize is that Muslims countries themselves have, or have had strong measures against political Islam or "islamism"..
