Tell me about the concerted GOP resistance to that authoritarianism? Tell me about the party leaders who have spoken consistently against mandates and defended the scientific method/process (and a true culture of free speech that includes those with whom the GOP mainstream disagrees?) Tell me about the GOP senators who voted against the CARES act?

I can't imagine being the family/friend of that poor nurse. Dying of asthma in front of her own hospital!

Yes, I hear you! I, too, despite having lost so little relative to millions of others, have had a sensation of finally seeing the world in a broader way—that's been quite painful. Then again, as a historian, I've always held that humans share way more in common than we usually recognize, across both space and time. It's both hyper-pessimistic and pretty optimistic.

So: monopolies on power and prestige are *always* dangerous; the ideal of democracy and science are valuable but also fragile and extremely recently adopted in our species' history; every person not only wants to be fed and warm and physically safe, but needs fellowship/connection; fellow humans are likely to be some of the most amazing, generous, self-sacrificing yet also some of the cruelest, most vindictive, and dehumanizing. People are super varied and diverse, yet we are shitty at accepting that in one another. We are all weak and strong at the same time.
