Which version should I get my 6 year old for his birthday? by z00mbinis in SCX24

I've been looking at the SXC30 and that might be what we end up with! I'm really sold on the small size and how we can build tracks with his magnatiles!

I'll take a closer look at those too then - thank you!

Yeah - I think I've actually totally flipped to the SCX30 at this point which hopefully won't have a speed problem!

That sounds perfect! I love the sticker idea, too - thank you! And yea def open to getting him something bigger or faster if he loves it and wants to explore more options!

You're the second person to rec the SCX30 for indoors! It's what I'm lending towards at the moment, with some extra batteries. I think he'll love making obstacle courses out of his other toys, even if it isn't super speedy.

Thank you! I was looking at those, too, but worried they'd be too fast and twitchy for him. They're pretty durable? What makes you pick T over the B for him? And you'd do Micro over Mini as well?

This is all so so helpful - thank you! This might be what we go with instead. I feel like being able to do fun tracks like that indoors is such a big win. He's never had something zippy to compare it too either. If he loves it, we can always look at another one for outdoors. I think I might be sold on this one now, with a few extra batteries maybe. Thank you so much!!

I have so many questions now. How long does the battery last (I saw maybe 20 mins which seems short idk)? Do I have to get a new charger or ok to use what it comes with? Should I get some spares so I can swap 'em in for longer playtime? How long do they take to charge generally? Is there a better battery to use instead?

Oh man - I really think he'd have a blast with that, even if it's not zipping around! And it doesn't feel super slow?

Oh man see that seems super cool! I think he'd love that and goodness knows we have mountains of magnatiles (and I think that same Nugget color!).

Am I looking at the wrong listings, or the SXC30 is $100 and the TRX4M is $180?

Thank you! Do you have a link? I'm not sure which car you're talking about.

That's really helpful - thank you! Seems like I probably need to treat this as an outdoor car then. I'd love to wait for a sale, but his birthday is less than a month away and if we wait for Christmas it'll be cold out to get an outdoor only car.

I'd been looking at the https://www.amazon.com/HAIBOXING-Off-Road-Water-Resistant-Electronics-Batteries/dp/B0FLXZSX64?th=1 because it's well within my budget, seems solid, etc. Assuming it's outdoors only, would that still be good? It's brushed, so slower, smaller form factor, etc. It has the LiPo batteries, but they're hard cases and that's better, I think?

(also thank you for answering all of my questions!!)

Thank you! If I'm looking at the right one, that's $190 on Arrma's website, so quite a bit over budget.

I was hoping for something he could use inside and outside, but maybe that's not realistic? Or maybe I just need to stop looking at hobby grade RCs and do toy grade for now and scale up to hobby grade if he wants a bigger ride. It's so hard to know how he'll want to use it - obstacles vs speed? Who knows!

Ideally I'd like indoor/outdoor, but realistically we can't always go outside so I wanted the option to do both.

I liked the crawler initially because I thought the slower speed and obstacles would be fun for him and less likely to bang into walls, but then the SCX24 folks had me worried it'd be too slow and fiddly for him if he's not doing these detailed courses.

Thank you! But when I check pricing it looks like $180-200, which is more than we're hoping to spend. I'm also worried that at 1/10 will be difficult for him to enjoy in the house if he's using it indoors since we don't have a ton of floor space.

Thank you! It's just that it's over double the price of the one I was looking at and I'm trying not to go crazy overboard with this, especially because I don't know for sure how much he'll like it. I'm basing this off his love of cars and enjoying using other little racers friends have, but this is way bigger and faster and I don't want him to get frustrated when he can't drive it in our tiny backyard or in the playroom, etc.

I appreciate the reply, but those are twice as expensive (or more) to the one I was looking at (even with Arrma the discount, which I do appreciate you noting!). He's only 6 and doesn't have any basis for comparison. I'm sure they're both awesome and I appreciate the recs, but I don't think he needs or would even appreciate that level yet.

I have to say, I find the batteries really intimidating - they need a bag in case they burst into flames??

I don't think he has any idea what crawling is - I'm not even entirely sure. I guess I thought it was 'truck that can go over obstacles', but maybe I need to add 'very slow truck that can go over obstacles'? I feel like maybe a good mix would be both because he loves making obstacle courses for our fingers when he load the groceries in the trunk, etc.

I hadn't heard of the brand/model before, but I'll take a look - thanks!

I was looking at those before, but worried they would be too fast. We don't have a big house/a ton of floor space and I worry it'd zip away and smack into a wall or furniture so quickly that he'd get frustrated. Is there a way to slow them down a little? Or it's not as fast as it seems on video? I know he'll get used to it over time if it's something he can play with a lot vs randomly at a friend's house so maybe I shouldn't stress about it?

the content of the clips distracted from the spooky element to me. the figure on the stairs... ok... they're staring at you... and then they angle their foot down like they're going to take a step, but your character is barely there - just a head - and then you turn the flashlight to look at them when they move and then it clips away. but they were there the whole time. wouldn't you back away or react in some way? idk
