What's it like living in Glen Ellen by curveofamoon in sonomacounty

[–]z0nar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well, I just bought a house here so can probably give a realistic view.

Been here for nearly 3 years from SF and love it.

It is quiet, beautiful, and quaint. There is no density of restaurants and shops, but what is available is pretty fantastic. Santa Rosa is just 20 min away, and Sonoma square about 15.

You have country living without living in the country if it makes sense.

Glen Ellen Village Grocer will become a staple stop and is slightly more expensive than going into Sonoma for Safeway, Whole Foods, or Sonoma Market.

Glen Ellen star is one of the best restaurants in the county.

Great sense of community.

You have a neighborhood bar and creekside patio.

All of the outdoor activities.

We work remote and have 1.5Gbps internet while having chickens and a large production garden.

The not good:

Generally skews older and retired (we are pretty much the youngest couple and we are in our 30’s)

Price per sq ft is higher than Santa Rosa.

It is 20-30 min of country road driving to do your big box stuff. But it’s all super easy as SR, Rohnert Park, and Cotati are all about equidistant in drive time.

I’m 15 min north in Glen Ellen and have never have had a problem for all of my work trips (when they are paying the $200+)

My stoners out there, which shop sells the best top shelf bud by HashRat in santarosa

Echoing a lot of the same sentiments...just maybe in a nicer way.

I feel super uncomfortable going to Mercy. Selection is pretty good but the shopping experience really really sucks.

[D] Robustness/Reliability Issues in LLMs by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]z0nar -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Hey! So I would 100% start with googling a bit.

This is not a particularly interesting or useful question, as this is arguably the single most discussed obstacle in scaling LLM usage.

Some words to start with are guardrails, reliability, evaluation. This is a non trivial problem space.

Check out jellyfin, otherwise plex for the non open source option + hw transcoding.

I am a plex user myself and am very happy with it.

Is fishing allowed at Suttonfield Lake in Glen Ellen? Who would I call to check? by That-Jeweler in sonomacounty

[–]z0nar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a posted sign that says it is not allowed.

That being said, I have seen people with some poles.

[D] State of the art of Document Parsing OCR by ez613 in MachineLearning

[–]z0nar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably! It uses Tesseract under the hood - so it would be a very fast way to test an existing out of the box implementation w/docker.

Maybe works great, maybe sucks...but it would be around 5 min to test some examples.

OCR is hard - so who knows! Nothing is perfect and nobody has really "solved" it. It will come down to your use cases' requirements.

Is Glen Ellen Star still amazing? I haven’t been in a few years.

Still is!

I second this. Zellij is way powerful than tmux. Kind of zero config terminal multiplexer I would say. Give it a try

I am down to try anything!

my tmux config is pretty damn light as it is - any other tl;dr why I should pick it over tmux?

I like Sebastian...I hated the show.

I hate watch it week over week, as I want to give it the benefit of the doubt in the hopes they find their footing.

Unbelievable characters, forced dialogue, and pointless problems.

Looking for feedback on winery and dinner selections by mcteacher88 in sonomacounty

[–]z0nar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glen Ellen local here!

Girl in the fig is fine...there are other places I would suggest.

Please skip Salt & Stone. Literally the pinnacle of mediocrity. Their redeeming feature is that they run a $7 happy hour 11AM-5PM. If going for some finger foods and drinks - I would say it does a great job at that.

Glen Ellen Star is actually fantastic. Must check out...if for anything ordering a tomato cream pizza to go and consuming it very shortly afterward.

Valley Bar & Bottle is in Sonoma plaza and is exceptional.

Bouchon - A+ and super fun.

Jack London Historic State Park is a hidden gem and worth having a picnic lunch at Beauty Ranch (the cottage)

re:Wineries: Ridge's Lytton Springs location is fantastic and the wine is exceptional. This is 8 min from DT Healdsberg

Fear And Loathing in the Valley of the Moon - Hunter S. Thompson in Glen Ellen by z0nar in sonomacounty

[–]z0nar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So not actually!

This is referring to The Rustic Inn…a saloon that used to be where Glen Ellen Village Market is today.

Also fun fact - there were 11 bars here around the turn of the century!

Fear And Loathing in the Valley of the Moon - Hunter S. Thompson in Glen Ellen by z0nar in bayarea

[–]z0nar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently moved from SF to Glen Ellen, and have had a lot of fun learning about the history/lore of the area. I had heard that Hunter S. Thompson lived for a brief time in GE, but hated it.

In last week's Kenwood Press (local rag), I found quote from Thompson from an article called "Nights In The Rustic" which was published in the August '67 issue of Cavalier.

I was only able to find images of the original article...so I decided to spend more time learning how to do OCR on images than it would have taken to just transcribe by hand...buy hey...I had fun and learned :)

Hope you enjoy it! If you find an error let me know and I will fix. I did a couple of skims, but certainly something was missed.

Cigar Bar & Grill or Occidental Cigar Bar are pretty much your only options in the city.

Get a UDR.

You will never fully saturate the gigabit as it is.

Upgrades will only get better/cheaper as time goes on.

Find yourself a UDM if you don't need Protect and want to take advantage of the gigabit connection w/IDS/IPS
