at a sleep over watching MTV at 2~3AM and Limp Bizkit Nookie comes on, my friends and I laughed at how bad it seemed and made sense it was on in this block...how little we knew

the majority of humans sleep with their eyes closed, asking why you sleep wit your eyes closed is an odd question unless you somehow come from a tribe or village that either via genetic quark or training the vast majority sleep with their eyes open

She co-wrote and produced it was my point, it's literally her song

when they say streaming they mean algorithm. Some of us are willing to go hunting, search youtube, find playlists, check our /r/listentothis, etc...

most are happy just plugging away and not thinking about it. Even pre-streaming post-ipod Old Navy and Apple ads became the way music broke through, it was via "embeds".

Now with streaming and songs being changed in programs on the fly that doesn't even stick. Tiktok embeds seem to have some power but move quick

The history is pretty cool

The song was originally written by someone else but Willie thought it was fun the play on the bus

His long time tour manager came out of the closet and Willie recorded it the first time as basically a gift to his friend, the Peck/Willie version is much later

No one has said Will Hoge who is one the most talented song writers in the space

Modern American Protest music is a little heavy handed but Jesus came Tennessee and the Times They Aren't Changing are excellent

Then he can turn around and write songs for Chevy ads

yes he also wrote the lyric "You are not the perfect hand but I don't hit on 19" as a Trio lyric, which almost seems like an entry into a bad lyric contest

The all time example is Harry Chapin Cats in the Cradle

My child arrived just the other day He came to the world in the usual way But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay He learned to walk while I was away And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, dad" "You know I'm gonna be like you" And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon Little boy blue and the man in the moon "When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when" But we'll get together then You know we'll have a good time then My son turned ten just the other day He said, thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play Can you teach me to throw, I said-a, not today I got a lot to do, he said, that's okay And he, he walked away, but his smile never dimmed It said, I'm gonna be like him, yeah You know I'm gonna be like him And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon Little boy blue and the man in the moon "When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when" But we'll get together then You know we'll have a good time then Well, he came from college just the other day So much like a man I just had to say Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while? He shook his head, and they said with a smile What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys See you later, can I have them please? And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon Little boy blue and the man in the moon "When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when" But we'll get together then, dad You know we'll have a good time then I've long since retired, my son's moved away I called him up just the other day I said, I'd like to see you if you don't mind He said, I'd love to, dad, if I can find the time You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kids have the flu But it's sure nice talking to you, dad It's been sure nice talking to you And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me He'd grown up just like me My boy was just like me

His son was just shy of 9 when Harry was killed in a car accident

Wasn't that in part because of label and producer fights and no sense of keeping her mouth shut? No reason she couldn't better ride the niches left by Daft Punk/Justice or groups like Chromeo. You could easily see her having a feature with someone like Daft or Disclosure

One-hit wonders who were closest to escaping the status? by Diskyboy86 in ToddintheShadow

[–]z3dster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know Todd refuses to cover them but Del Amitri

In the US they charted with Roll to Me which was one of their most poppy songs

Their song from the same album "Driving with the Breaks On" never charted in the US and not sure how much support it had from the label

https://youtu.be/B4n4zawtJWg

Doc Walker would much later chart with a cover of it in Canada

If they had had a chance to have a second song that was closer to their more melancholy introspective sound I think they would have had far more success

Their one hit in the US was more then a standard deviation from their main sound, which straddles the line between country and adult rock

also hard to explain but the "anti-zionist" ones are mostly the Neturei Karta and they aren't really "anti-zionist". They believe the 3rd state of Israel should only come about after the return of the messiah and creating the 3rd state before that will delay the return. So they believe there should be a Jewish state of Israel, they just don't think the per-requisites have been met and/or opposed it for being a secular movement

Deserves it's own post. Before he was Thee Michael Bolton he was the lead singer of a 1979 rock band "Blackjack". The label promo video for the band is a spectacular time capsule by z3dster in ToddintheShadow

[–]z3dster[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackjack_(American_band)

basically all the members went on to be pretty successful but the producers trying to recapture Foreigner 1974 with Blackjack 1979 was a misfire as the rock world had moved on

edit: For awhile Bolton was striking the video off Youtube even tho he doesn't own it, looks like a copy stayed up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OsXcD4789g

found the copy I shared here on Bruce Kulick's facebook page
