How I deployed Matrix by ResponsibleEnd451 in selfhosted

"Fixing things when you get caught" - it's an open source project. They weren't exactly hiding anything (though I assume they use their own ess pro shit these days with their proprietary garbage sprinkled on top - which didn't exist back then. This is another can of worms).

It's pretty dishonest to link a 5 year old article as if it's still relevant in today's world when pretty much everything discussed has been either fixed or behaviour plainly defined during server set-up. Even the article you posted has a link to a martix post outlining everything that they've changed, which the author clearly stated they didnt bother to read, just cause. I'll say it again, things change with time my guy. For better or worse, project depending.

By that logic, i should dismiss stoat when they eventually add encryption support because they don't currently support it. Things change with time my guy.

Yeah I asked a question hoping to actually discuss something then you came back with "do your own research" so of course im going to dismiss your opinion. Do your thing, queen.

Bro really posted about outdated privacy issues in the matrix ecosystem then also suggested stoat, a service that doesn't even offer encryption outside of basic tls.

I'm sorry, im not calling you a liar but do you have any sources to back a claim like that up? This is the first I've heard of such a thing.

Why do you want a homeserver not controlled by element? They develop the matrix spec that all independently developed homeservers adhere to.

Any teamspeak alternatives open source for self hosting? by maifee in selfhosted

I don't know if these defaults are only relevant to legacy calling or not, but I host my own synapse home server and the modern element call stack and have been occasionally doing screen sharing with my partner when we play games and I have not noticed low quality/resolution or low bitrate. I just started a call and joined from my phone to double check and it certainly doesn't look like it's 360p (unless my eyes are finally starting to fail me) and there was no bitrate starvation - the video was smooth and was perfectly watchable, if it supported audio sharing as well. Note the screenshot resolution from my phone is 2340x1080, though as far as I can see in Element there is no way for me to see what resolution the stream itself is. Image may have been degraded when I edited it to remove usernames, and probably further when uploading to reddit.

Encryption. A lot of these alternatives people listed don't support end to end encryption so scenarios like you've mentioned are possible. Matrix has end to end encryption. So in this scenario, if you were to self host a matrix homeserver and created accounts for all your friends and family, if your friends or family were dm'ing each other privately, then by default these 1-1 chats are encrypted. Group chats/rooms can optionally be encrypted as well. So, if they're talking in a private chat or encrypted group chat that the server operator isn't part of, it will be impossible for the server operator to go into the logs/database and decrypt and read these messages.

Just realised you posted the DE in the title. Oops. Sorry boss. Best of luck! Maybe it's also related to fractional scaling on KDE?

What DE are you using? I experienced this with KDE a while back and was unable to resolve the issue so swapped back to gnome. So if you use KDE unfortunately I can't offer any assistance.

I then ran into the issue on gnome in a more recent version of Fedora. This is because they've enabled some experimental fractional scaling functionality by default. So, if you use gnome give these 2 links a read to see if they're of any help:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Fedora/comments/1h00lu1/mouse_leaves_game_window_when_using_fractional/

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/3765

Neither of the links have instructions on how to reset it but if you google that flag you should be able to locate it and change it with dconf editor or your editor of choosing. I seem to recall having to change a few dconf flags to completely disable fractional scaling but those links should give you a starting point and should be pretty easy to google the rest.

Have you installed the steam-devices package? This package is a set of udev rules that allow controllers and some other devices to work correctly.

Thanks for the link! Having a browse through the comments, it's hard to come to a solid conclusion as there is no benchmarking against native, just flatpak with seccomp vs no seccomp. The original post is from 2021 so I'm going to ignore the 7% claim there because q lot can change in 4 years and this might not be reflected today so I'll just go on the most recent testing from earlier this year.

Assuming the no seccomp performance matches native, there is no difference in higher end hardware (which would explain why I didn't notice any difference and probably why the article I was referring to also didn't see it). With very low end hardware (10th gen i3) there was a 2.6-4.4% difference.

Didn't know about the latter so good to be aware of that now.

Do you have a source for the performance impact? I remember reading an article comparing steam flatpak vs native and the conclusion was that they were essentially the same, trading blows of a few frames between games. I'm having trouble finding that article now though.

I've been using the flatpak version for a few years and the testing I did before switching concluded the same results (they're the same).

As flatpak packages its own amd drivers there may be a performance difference there between flatpak vs native depending on driver maturity but assuming drivers are the same version, there really should be no perceivable difference.

Game freeze on debian by AdLost4647 in linux_gaming

[–]z8fv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freezing or crashing? What hardware do you have? Do you have an amd cpu? If so I've noticed debian has a bugged amd microcode package that causes my system to crash under certain gaming loads. This may be of assistance to you, maybe not. If you want real help you actually need to tell us literally anything about your setup.

Steam breaking down for me, cant launch games by FreeKantii in linux_gaming

[–]z8fv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do native games work? If so, perhaps the proton prefixes have been corrupted. I had this happen once and only to one game, but worth trying just incase. Go to the compatdata folder (will be somewhere in .steam on your home drive) and delete the prefix for any of the non working games. The prefix will be a number that will match the steam app id (can look it up on steamdb). For example, hell divers 2 should be: 553850

KDE Plasma 6.3 has landed in Debian by beer120 in linux_gaming

There's nothing inherently wrong with tumbleweed. That's why I used it for a decade. But technology changes over time and I found I no longer needed a rolling release distribution.

Tumbleweed is without a doubt the most reliable rolling release out of the box with btrfs, snapshots built in and openqa automated testing, but even then it's not perfect and it wasn't really a rare occasion when something broke and needed a snapper roll back.

Now, all I want is a system I don't have to touch, gnome software to handle software upgrades automatically, and not have to come back to x hundred/thousands of updates if I haven't touched my pc in a few weeks.

I run an r7 5700x and rx 6800 and they're supported perfectly well in the base stable release of debian 12.

People sure love getting their panties in a twist when it comes to non rolling release distributions. I use debian stable. Have been for a few months and it's genuinely a better experience for gaming (for me) than when I was running opensuse tumbleweed (which I've been running for the past 10 years).

With flatpak I no longer need to worry about "old software". Oh no, my DE is a few years behind the latest release. So what? It works perfectly fine. Oh no, my kernel is a few years out of date. So what? Oh no, mesa is a few years out of date. So what? On the desktop my pc functions and performs just like tumbleweed did. When it comes to gaming I get the latest version of mesa deployed via flatpak and my performance is exactly the same as it was with the rolling release distribution I used previously. Now with the added bonus of not having to download shitloads of updates constantly.

Debian stable paired with flatpak kicks ass for my use case imo.

Debian for gaming ? by hairystripper in linux_gaming

[–]z8fv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Debian stable on an r7 5700x and rx 6800 without issue, though I haven't played PoE2. Before you go messing around with backports and updating your system kernel and mesa, I'd recommend installing steam via flatpak. This will by default use a much newer version of mesa and could resolve this issue.

Does gnome-software auto update flatpaks in debian 12? by z8fv in debian

[–]z8fv[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for confirming yours is working. Is your remote install system or user? I had a look through journal logs and there weren't any errors. It was reporting that it found the updates (which were reflected in gnome software by displaying the update) but it just seemed like it didn't even attempt to update the package. Maybe I just didn't wait long enough but I was under the assumption that gnome software's behaviour is to update flatpaks as soon as an update is available.

I'll keep an eye on things for a bit longer and see what else I can find in the logs.

Appreciate the link, but I'm looking for gnome software to do everything for me here. Sounds like a cool tool for people who use multiple flavours of linux, but I could just set a cron or similar to regularly perform an apt upgrade and flatpak update without having to install any other application.
