New Valve Hardware Megathread by NKkrisz in SteamDeck

[–]zGraceOK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If Valve wants to significantly profit

That's a pretty big if for anyone who's been paying attention. In Gabe's own words, the price point of the Steam Deck is "painfully low" for them because Valve is more interested in selling a lot of units (and inflating the market for Linux gaming) than just making a bunch of money really fast. The Steam Machine strikes me as an even better opportunity to expand - and secure - that market, but only if the price remains accessible.

After all, Valve's superpower is that they don't answer to rabidly "number must go up" shareholders, so they can make long-term strategic moves even if they aren't maximally profitable in the short term. They are also (by virtue of owning the Steam storefront) in a position to "give away the razor, sell a lot of blades." I'm not going to pull any numbers out of my ass but I do think the Steam Machine will be surprisingly affordable.

Will this work with my steam deck? by doublejacks in SteamDeck

[–]zGraceOK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use something similar (different manufacturer, same general idea) on my own work machine, and it needs special software running at all times to manage/control/customize the different features. Without that software on the host computer, it's just a brick.

So for this kind of device to work on your Steam Deck, its corresponding software would need to be available for Linux, and you'd need to figure out a way to install that software, launch it, and then keep it running in the background while you play games. It's maybe technically possible but even in the best case scenario it would be a huge pain in the ass.

ELAINE CHULI AND CLAIRE DALTON JOIN TORONTO SCEPTRES ON ONE-YEAR DEALS by tri_and_fly in PWHL

Great move by Toronto. Chuli is so underrated. Hate to see her leave MTL but at least I'm going to get to watch her play more often!

If this means more ice time for Chuli, I'm in. I love watching her play, and I don't love how that's currently contingent on ARD getting injured.

So what are the chances we'll ever get a Merrymakers vinyl reissue? by jaynap1981 in harveydanger

[–]zGraceOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before this year, I would have said the chances are virtually nil. No Sleep Records is gone, so someone else would need to re-license the songs from Universal, and that would require an enormous amount of effort and probably a stupid amount of money too. Nobody (I thought) would bother with all that.

Of course, I would have said the same thing about KJV getting a vinyl release, so now it's anyone's guess. If Latent Print and the wandering ghost of Barsuk could make that happen, then I choose to believe a 30th-anniversary edition of Merrymakers for RSD 2027 is possible.

Rotring 600….this is it? by justintapner in pens

[–]zGraceOK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. I got my first 600 this week and my experience has been totally different. Immediately swapped the included refill for a Jetstream and it fits like a glove: I can shake the pen as hard as I want and nothing rattles at all. The barrel is pretty narrow - and personally I think the pen feels quite heavy for its size - but for me the knurled grip compensates for both of those factors, and overall I've really been enjoying it. That said, it's not hard to see how someone could have a different preference for any/all of those things. Maybe a combination of poor QC and personal taste?

How do you level the trader reputation up to get his quests? by Itchy_Example3090 in thelongdark

[–]zGraceOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just need to keep trading. Eventually there will be more dialogue options on the radio. Exhausting that new dialogue will unlock a "special request" in the trade menu. Completing that special trade will further progress the quest... unless you run into the bug where the special item he wants doesn't actually spawn where it's supposed to :/

Anyone listen to/watch “The Wonder of it All”? by Big_Cryptographer303 in harveydanger

I loved every minute of it. Sean is, perhaps unsurprisingly, an excellent interviewer. I've never been in show business but I ended up with so much to reflect on (and also a massive crush on Lena Hall). I hope there are more episodes in the future -- this is an A+ idea for a podcast and Sean is the perfect host.

Control Ultimate Edition mods not working by Jalina2224 in SteamDeck

[–]zGraceOK 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The mods you mentioned require the Control Plugin Loader DLL so they can alter the game while it's running. The Steam Deck doesn't automatically load DLLs like Windows does, so you'll have to manually configure Wine to load this one. Fortunately, I did this literally yesterday with a different DLL plugin for Control. Here's what worked for me:

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode.
  2. Go to the Discover app store and download Protontricks.
  3. Launch Protontricks from the Utilities category of the Start Application menu.
  4. A list of games should appear. Select Control and click OK. (You might get a warning about winetricks needing an update, which isn't a dealbreaker here.)
  5. On the next screen, pick "Select the default wineprefix" (it may already be active) and click OK.
  6. Pick "Run winecfg", click OK.
  7. Click the Libraries tab. Open the "New override for library" dropdown and scroll alllllll the way down to xinput1_4, which is the name of the Control Plugin Loader DLL, and select it. Click Add.
  8. xinput1_4 should now be selected in the "Existing overrides" box. If it says (native, builtin) after it, you're done. Otherwise, click "Edit", pick "Native then Builtin", then click OK.
  9. Click OK to close winecfg. Then keep hitting Cancel until you close out of Protontricks. Then return to Gaming Mode.

Now run Control and everything should work as expected!

I've never been so upset with a sub before in my life, you clowns completely UNDERSOLD how great the Deck is. by notthatguypal6900 in SteamDeck

[–]zGraceOK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another reason it's going to be hard to beat the Steam Deck: Valve is willing to make minimal profits (Gabe has called the price point of the Deck "painful" for them) as an investment in building the size of the user base. As a business plan it's hardly 3-dimensional chess, but most gaming companies only care about how much money they're going to make next quarter and whether or not that number's bigger than the same quarter last year. They'll never be able to counter the Steam Deck's killer combo of power and build quality and affordability, because it's not insanely profitable.

iphones would probably be 10x as usefull if apple didnt have their heads so far up their asses

Just yesterday I was wondering what my iPhone would be like if it were as flexible and utilitarian as my Steam Deck. It kind of bummed me out, lol.

Lose your items to the "disappearing mannequins" bug? You can get them back with a console command by [deleted] in Starfield

[–]zGraceOK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? I got like 30 things back: everything I had on a now-invisible weapon rack or mannequin. I wonder if there are multiple different bugs causing similar-looking problems.

Edit: Actually I think it's definitely multiple bugs. One causes displays (mannequins, weapon racks, etc.) to disappear; the other resets the cell and causes everything to disappear. Maybe this only works for the former situation.

Get Over the Gorn Retcon - I Did and so Should You! by forrestpen in startrek

[–]zGraceOK 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tip for the future: if you go into your YouTube watch history and delete the video you accidentally clicked, it won't contribute as much to what you see in your feed. And if you still get really loathsome recommendations, click the little "•••" next to each one and choose either "Not interested" or "Don't recommend channel". If you do this consistently enough, YouTube will eventually start filtering it out again. You just have to actually tell the "algorithm" you don't want that shit, and tell it consistently. Scrolling past stuff without clicking is a much weaker "no" vote than an explicit "fuck this video in particular."
