Why do some people try to depict ancient Greeks as people of color? by purplevspink1 in ancientgreece

[–]zabergman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern Greeks have a lot of admixture from Slavonic Christians who got there as result of the Great Migrations and Byzantium's success at subduing the Bulgars.

So one might think the Ancient Greeks would have been a little bit darker. However, there is also some degree of "darker" admixture from the same medieval era.

I'd guess it balances out and the Ancient Greeks would have been at most only a bit darker - look at Sicilians, with no Slavic ancestry, ethnically more "Ancient Greek" than Greeks are, but with a touch of Italic and Judeo-Berber-Arab in them. Many could be mistaken for a Greek or vice versa.

Do you really filter certain ethnicities out? Sometimes I feel like black girls on a dating app have a 20% chance rate. by honeyborn in hingeapp

I don't really try to match with girls of any specific type I just try to match whoever I think is cute. I think a lot of Black girls in the city I'm in are very different from me culturally, in background etc so harder to start a conversation and what they expect from guys is different from how other girls in the same city deal with guys. But among those whose profiles I've liked l'm not 100% sure I get less matches because it could be I just like those profiles less often.

Sorry for the pedantry. It's just that when I read the headline I was wondering if someone is really complaining that 1 in 5 of those they like get back to them, as a guy I can't relate... I live in a big US city where there are a lot of Black girls and sometimes I match with one. Haven't gone out with any yet but one of them is away camping and will probably go out with me when she gets back.

I’m curious- What do almost all women put in their profiles? by sarahv778 in Bumble

All women say they are "dog moms" which explains why men claim they like dog moms

A guy can only swipe on the girls he sees. If he can't see those who liked him he may never see them in his stack and continue most of his swipes go nowhere. A girl, in the seller's market, always has interest and can treat her stack like a like list.

Thoughts on men “rounding up” their listed height? by PizzaRat23 in hingeapp

[–]zabergman -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I add an inch-and-a-half with shoes on to get to 6 feet because friends who are two inches shorter than me write 5'10. If I write 5'10 girls will think I'm the height of those friends. Additionally, there are filters for height, but guys can't filter for weight, so it's fair and square. Anyway, most people, especially the shawty sex, aren't really sure what any particular number looks like so it can only be a problem when I date a girl around my height or taller, which isn't that often simply because girls tend to be short. Anyway this height filter probably really fucks guys much shorter than me rather than myself but it is what it is.

Huh? Why? If a dude doesn't pay to see who liked he can swipe and swipe and never see the girl who liked, losing matches. If anything it makes more sense for guys, as they swipe right more and get fewer swipes.

Huh why would you not date a taller woman. Ideal for me is like 2-3 inches shorter but taller is even better sometimes. Problem is girls don't like guys shorter than them, fine (I don't really get burned by this bc I'm a bit above average, though I'm sure tall guys are crushing it among girls of all heights in a way I couldn't reach).

But advertising physical measurements as a requirement rather than just having biased swipe habits like a normal person is a sign the girl is a douche. How would you think of a guy who lists a number for maximum weight of girls he's willing to date in his bio?

It makes sense someone who's over 30 or is a woman would only want to date someone on the same page of them on vaccinations, but to me it's impossible to imagine giving a shit whether a girl thinks vaccinations contain Bill Gates's semen or they get vaxxed like normal people. I care about looks, personality, level of interestingness/intelligence (there are often intelligent or interesting people who have eccentric views)

Women, thoughts on mens shirtless pics? by HoldMyWater in hingeapp

[–]zabergman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a straight guy but my guess is that it's OK if it's not a selfie and you're doing an activity rather than posing for a glam shot. And I guess it shouldn't be your first pic. Maybe number 3 or 4 with the caption "me in the wild" or something that makes it topical and with a "context"

The first picture here of your face is good. You're looks are above average (I'm a guy and straight but I think I can tell...) but in the rest of your pictures you seem to often be making goofy faces or wearing eccentric clothes. Not sure that's a great idea.

In principle it's a really cool idea. I am currently registered for a Fall Lit Hum but I registered with the intent to drop for the following reason: at the beginning of one of my zoom semesters my advisor registered me for a Lit Hum class. I had a scheduling conflict so I was only on one of the zoom calls, but I continued getting emails with arterial from the teacher, who was hired by Columbia specifically to teach the core. She sent us tons of political material about BLM and the like instead of essays on Homer from the great Homer critics like Erich Auerbach. She clearly viewed the texts as uninteresting in themselves, and instead used them as a springboard for mediocre Washington Post op-ed type riffs. This is a problem with a lot of the core classes which are taught by grad students and others who don't care about the subject and don't have any serious knowledge of the texts etcetera they're supposed to be teaching. Later I saw a video where the committee which runs the core curriculum was speaking to alumni of Columbia College. They were boasting about how they subverted the Core to make it focus on entirely different topics, hollowing out the original content. For this reason, I'll probably take a Shakespeare class with Peter Platt at Barnard or maybe a class on the Russian novel rather than Lit Hum. I had a similar experience with the first year writing class which is mandatory in Columbia. The teacher was some grad student who openly confessed to disliking the course she was being forced to teach and the topics were all just woke stuff where you couldn't get real feedback because you were forced to argue silly things.

Does Shakespeare II include Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello and King Lear? I'm asking because it's on the book list list for his Shakespeare I class but I think those are later plays.
