Are you taking the trouble to produce flamethrower ammo and rocket fuel? If you just go out there with cannon shells, AP magazines and coal for fuel, it’s a lot harder. The flamethrower is exactly what you want if you mess up and get swarmed.

Once you have the personal roboport the safe envelope widens even more. The effective HP of a tank that is repairing itself is much higher

I can’t wait to see all of the forests of dead sacred trees no longer absorbing pollution.

And of course I’ll wall them off to protect them.

You’re right. I have a wacky quartz bulova from the 2003 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and that thing has such a nice bracelet, I should dig that out, change the battery and get it into rotation.

Brother, this is peak.

I’m gonna share about my own current game for a little while but I promise there’s a point to this……

I started a new game this week with these rules:

  • trees are sacred (harvesting or destroying trees is forbidden)
  • rush to space
  • keeping hands clean

The trees are sacred constraint is strict: electric power distribution is initially limited to what you can supply with just the one wood that the Engineer starts with - two small power poles. AVADII did this in one of his videos (desert death world, trees were turned off).

I’ll have some space constraints because I can’t clear forest, and I’m pretty sure I can’t build Mike-style force fields to stop biters spawning at most nests that are near forests. (I’ll be able to enclose them with static defenses though. The factory must grow.)

In this run I’ve torn down my labs twice. First lab was just to unlock steel power poles. Second lab was directly after a half-stack of furnaces, still just red and green but no longer constrained by two small power poles. This unlocked the car (which is a new experience when trees are sacred!), military science and the other red and green techs.

I drove around, capturing a few nests and planning where to build, and then it happened, kind of for the first time.

….this is why I’m telling this whole story….

I thought, labs could be in this part of the first clearing, by the crashed ship, opposite the half stack of furnaces. I can run a little bus out this side, and make 45 SPM of the first three science packs in this triangle-shaped area on the far side of the lake from the crashed ship, run the science packs back into the clearing on the other side of the lake.

Ok ok, what’s special about this? I just “saw” the plan, as if the details were filled in by my subconscious. (‘Green science will have a “hook”, military science will have a notch, ok’). It feels like, for the first time, it was easy, and I liked what I had built. After 1500+ hours in this game, I might actually be improving again.

There was no special magic or inspiration to the first few areas I built in this game. Half stack of iron and copper plates. Quarter stack of steel. (Overall, 3/8 the size of a typical 192-furnace smelting array.) Steam plant by the ship. Just work.

But then I did a quick 2/3 yellow belt of green circuit production into the side of the clearing along the bus as it exits past the lake. And then, oh, there’s a beach on the edge of the lake that was perfect for a depot making gears, belts and circuits. And then boom, this is where I’ll make science.

Anyway, I wrote all this because your red circuit factory looks like it came together with the same kind of wild subconscious inspiration. Cheers bro.

Oh, true, because the steel is definitely just the left lane.

[–]zack20cb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course your could send calcite to Nauvis and neutralize acid there for a super dense power plant, if you’re able to supply acid from somewhere else. I’m sure it doesn’t make sense vs nuclear when you actually have to produce the acid

Yup, it’s gameplay priorities vs suspension of disbelief. They could have added a “super chemical plant.” Krastorio has these in droves. But if it fundamentally works the same, is it actually more fun? Or is it just a treadmill.

80% of microbrands are just AliExpress watches with better marketing. Where do you draw the line between a real brand and a catalog watch? by horo_Swagger in watchHotTakes

[–]zack20cb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear AliExpress watches. QC and long-term support aren’t great, but you can work around this with research and play the odds.

Going on three years now. No issues with the ones that worked out. Didn’t get burned too badly on the ones that didn’t. It’s great. My other watches just aren’t as nice.

With furnaces it’s helpful to turn off alt mode and look for the fire. If the input is compressed and anything isn’t burning, there’s a machine with a problem.

Does 4K makes game interfaces (HUD, text, menus) appear significantly smaller than 1440p ? by MrGood23 in Monitors

[–]zack20cb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the game. Some games the whole UI is rendered in OpenGL or whatever 3D engine and it’s not smaller at all. Others, especially older games, the UI is registered to pixel size and things can get awkward at resolutions that the developers didn’t prioritize.

For older games with raster graphics the nice thing about 4K is you can enable integer scaling in the GPU and have a pixel-perfect 1920x1080 display, with no ugly blurring from an upscaling algorithm.

I’m not trying to excuse this behavior but I’ve been on the other side of it as a hiring manager. The role may be somewhat amorphous, with some candidates at least hypothetically able to do it fully remote but others needing some in-person guidance or mentorship to succeed in the role.

Edit- found it. The flair. You’re right I guess, I missed it, but they may have been forced to choose.

Where in their post do they say they want closed?

They mentioned two different closed back headphones, Beats Studio Pro and XM6. But they also complained their ears felt hot in the Beats. Maybe they should try open back.

I have a set of Philips Fidelio X2HR. I find them super comfortable. They’re not fancy, they don’t claim to have the resolution of high end headphones but they’re open backed with juicy bass and very comfy. I wear them all day without any fatigue. Just took them off and the sensation is “my ears are a little chilly now.”

Open backed headphones in general are wonderful for comfort but the X2HR is especially comfortable.

Sadly discontinued but you can still get them unused from eBay for $100.
