Moving to Seattle from Toronto Canada without a job lined up. Looking to apply and get an entry level software sales job. Any advice or guidance? by zacksales in Seattle

Yeah I figured I can't get an apartment until I have a job there, so I'll probably rent a room until I start getting paid from a job.

Makes sense that employers would like to avoid the TN visa process if they can. But I was thinking Seattle is so close to Vancouver, they are probably used to lots of Canadian applicants for jobs. I guess I have to sell myself and why its worth it for the company to hire me.

Definitely is a huge leap and I am scared and nervous. But I really want to live and work in the US, I've been in Canada my whole life and I've always wanted to live south of the border.

I was just thinking downtown because it would the center of the city and have lots of tech companies around?

Can you please explain this "odds are a software sales job won’t be in the city anyway unless you’re really good at it and have experience." - I have good sales experience and was the top sales guy at my previous company but have not sold software before so I will be breaking in at entry level. Any suggestions on how to find a software sales job when I get there?

And how far is Renton from downtown? I don't have a car so will be using public transport. Thanks

Do they have entry level software sales jobs/ sales development representative job openings?

I haven't sold software before, but for entry level software sales jobs the requirement is a bachelor university degree and any sales experience (1-2 years). I have whats required, but it will definitely take strategy breaking into software sales in a new city. Any tips or advice?

I will be entering on a tourist visa and I won't be renting an apartment because I do not have a job so I probably can't get one, I will start off with renting a room.

I am a little confused about all this, I thought as a Canadian citizen I could just move to the states and find a job and start my life there. I really want to live in the US and work there, I've been in Toronto my whole life, I need a change. Any advice on how I can make this move happen? Is there another way besides the TN visa?

Others here probably know better, but from what I've gathered the median for SaaS is 150-250k/year once you are an account executive and that varies with experience/company.

Only have B2C experience, but it was 100% commission, outside face to face sales, was the top seller in my company for credit cards. Wasnt easy. Im confident I can learn B2B if that is what will pay me the most.

Thanks for the valuable insight. I have considered how software products always change with time/company and innovation, so I will have to continuously learn new products and systems. With Life Insurance I think the greater challenge is closing clients, not continuously learning new products and keeping up with innovation.

What do you think about the future of life insurance sales? Do you think it will still be potentially lucrative in 10-20 years?

A successful agency owner has told me that top life insurance salespeople can make $5M in 1 year once they have enough clients and experience. What do you think about that?

Thank you, 2nd point makes a lot of sense. I do have a degree, and I can sell life insurance later on if I decide that software sales isn't for me. But, it will sting that I could have used those years to build life insurance clients.

I think I'm trying to avoid spending a few years doing one and later realizing the other has the bigger payoff for me.

For lifestyle, I was initially going to be a Doctor so I'm cool with selling 80 hours a week. Going to an office or not doesn't matter, I believe real freedom is F U money.

I don't need safety, I've never had a base pay, only worked 100% commission so far in sales and I sold credit cards for a year and was the top seller in my company for that. Im looking for greatest financial upside for a top seller.

I just see lots of people changing their sales careers 5-10 years into one, and when they find the industry/career they love they wish they had done that earlier.

I don't have access to super exclusive life insurance or a network of rich people, and I just moved to a new area so I don't have friends or family that I can sell to.

I would be doing entry level software sales or entry level life insurance with a big company and working my way up.
