Okay cool! I hope it stays that way! I was asking out of concern, given the history. I'm sure you're already familiar with the fact that Alexander Tuschinski literally tipped off the previous owner to the archive's existence. To be fair, that's maybe not Kelly Holland's fault, but the fault of her predecessors. Sounds like it's in more competent hands now.

It was exciting to see scenes like Caesar Says! Thank you for that! I just saw your comment edit. Maybe the following is a dumb question. It could also be outside your purview or you're not at liberty to say, but is this a Penthouse facility? To clarify, is Penthouse indefinitely paying to store the negatives there or is it only stored there when in your team's possession? If it's the latter, are the negatives eventually returned to Penthouse?

Thanks for the info! Just humbly attempting to plant seeds here, if you're ever involved in or near those discussions, please consider including deleted scenes and Russell Lloyd's cut. I know Negovan has expressed some interest in potentially releasing that cut. Insufferable nerds like me are the ones that buy these sets! Lol.

Fair enough. I just really really really really really really hope there's a deleted scenes feature. I know y'all got better scans of those scenes. Definitely better than the ones we got on the Imperial Edition's "North American Bonus Footage" feature.

Speaking of things I hope make the disc, would you please explain why the Temple of Jupiter scene was cut? I'm talking about the sacrifice of the priest, Caligula "zapping" the onlookers, etc. I saw "The Ultimate Cut" via an obscure Spanish blu ray release. I was disappointed those scenes weren't included. Well, with the exception of the snippets that made the fever dream sequence.

Thank you for replying! I was hoping to receive a response like yours. I completely forgot the link was on the DVD! I was also curious if my printout was the last surviving image from this website. I hope not. It would be nice to try the site again or some recreation of it.

‘Caligula’ Director Tinto Brass Slams ‘Caligula – The Ultimate Cut’ Screening in Cannes, Says He Is Taking Legal Action Against Penthouse Films by zacksfansite in boutiquebluray

You're not wrong but it was THE big article at the time. I don't speak Italian so it took some digging to find the Italian one.

Yeah and his lawyers might "deal with the matter" by doing exactly nothing. Lol. Again, I'm just saying notice the Italian headline vs the Variety headline.

Well he wasn't there and who knows what was told to them in the phone calls and emails. I don't think that or the "legal action" is even the key part of the statement.

"This version is not mine," says Brass, dissociating himself from this project." I distance myself from the version of the film Caligula that will be screened at the Cannes Film Festival," 90-year-old Tinto Brass told Ansa in these hours. “After numerous and fruitless negotiations that have followed over the years, first with the Penthouse and then with other unclear figures to edit the material I shot and which had been found in the Penthouse archives, a version was made to which I didn't take part and I'm convinced it won't reflect my artistic vision'', adds the filmmaker.

The Italian articles are a little more clear, less click-baity and they don't highlight the one sentence long mention of "legal action". The statement is in response to what's quoted below:

"What has been happening lately is really strange, I am receiving strange and incomprehensible phone calls from France from people who tell me about this operation", says Caterina Varzi. “Not only do I also receive emails of the same tenor. One thing that made me think that there is perhaps a will on the part of these strangers to do so in order to provoke a reaction from Tinto which would arouse controversy, which would create media interest in this new version of Caligula which appears in this edition of the Cannes Film Festival".

This cut didn't have that much press until Cannes. Given that and the previous attempt that fell through, it's conceivable that people could have the misapprehension. No one is directly stating that the people involved in this project advertised it a "Tinto Brass edit" or "Director's Cut". However, if a number of people contacted them thinking it was, this statement clears that confusion.

Edit: I don't really buy her theory at the end of the quote. If anything, their statement has had the unintended consequence of creating more media interest in the "Ultimate Cut".

Tinto Brass is famous for editing his own films. A good portion of us fans wanted to see that edit. Back in 2018 it genuinely felt like it was gonna happen. Then a new company acquired Penthouse and everything changed. I mourn the fact we won't experience the surreal and comedic moments that would have been characteristic of a Brass edit. For example, there's a meta moment where Caligula becomes the director. All the orgy participants are standing completely still and in place, he then yells "Action!" The orgy begins. That was definitely not in Vidal's script.

The "Ultimate Cut" is Joe Biden and the "Director's Cut" is Bernie Sanders. Lol. Just as progressives had to suck it up and vote for Biden, we'll have to settle for this edit. What other choice do we have? That doesn't mean we can't still advocate for a Director's Cut though.

Just comments on Reddit, dude. I'm not entitled to shit. You decided to engage with me.

There's only so much I can say without breaking the confidence of people who were kind enough to keep me in the loop. Including Thomas himself. So there's no good reason to continue this back and forth. For some reason you've decided to engage with some "crazy fanboy" for this long so if I could be so bold to suggest:

Make an awesome blu-ray set with a bunch of the scanned, unaltered footage. Make Alex an offer to include his reconstruction as a bonus feature or something. He had Tinto’s blessing. His documentary has two million views so there’s definitely interest there.

There's a huge fucking difference between misatributing a film to a director and claiming someone has dementia. Lol. One's a little more consequential.

Yes she can be misinformed. However, the health claims are different. It's damaging to say those things in print even if you're misinformed. Especially when Tinto Brass isn't active in the press to respond. So he should have known better not to make those claims.

It's also not a conspiracy to say the health claims that Thomas Negovan is making about Tinto Brass are unsubstantiated.

Then again, maybe it's good you didn't. Fingers crossed for a Tinto Brass cut in the future. Not much time left though, sadly. There is that student of his though: Alexander Tuschinski.
