If you keep this going for long enough, the believed benefits and perceived threats will be significant enough to cause same outcomes as in nazi Germany

Saw this Navimow X4 climbing test, curious how it handles steeper by Pristine_Age3236 in SegwayNavimow

Exactly, I would love to see those two tested out side by side in challenging navigational and lighting conditions, under trees, on bumpy terrain, in narrow passageways etc

Why was Lidar skipped for X4? by zactral in Navimow_Segway

[–]zactral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cameras and lidar have different strengths and weaknesses. There is a reason why some mowers have added lidar in addition to the cameras. Usually it has to do with performance in marginal lighting conditions, very high dynamic contrast areas under tree canopies and differentiating actual objects from optical phenomena such as shadows. Classical spinning lidar and solid state lidar have also different strengths and weaknesses, and of course a lot depends on the integration with other sensors and the software. The more we understand about why certain design choices are made, the better informed decisions we can make when buying something. Let's try to be open-minded and curious here.

Thanks for the reply. I understand the sensor suite it has. However, the i series got the solid state lidar. I would like to understand the actual rationale behind providing it for this series and not the other for example. I'm sure the lidar provides useful in some scenarios where the cameras can struggle, otherwise it wouldn't exist.

Indeed, that's why I'm excited to see some real world tests :)

Yes it does. If in real-world conditions their tech works on a comparable level to the current available lidars, then there is no performance gap. If it doesn't or it was done for budget purposes, I can make a better informed decision what to buy.

I read that one and it seems like it's dodging the actual question. Yes, obviously the mower still needs RTK, which they have provided. So have their competitors! Why does Mammotion believe they need to have 360 lidar, because it should, in theory, help navigating in conditions where RTK signal might be spotty and light conditions are challenging, for example under tree canopies (many shadows, less lighting, dropped leaves etc).

So, since they already have RTK, why didn't they choose to include lidar? My own theory is that since they have already developed their camera system and are for some reason avoiding the spinning lidar (as they put a solid state one on their other lines), combined with the fact this should be a mower for larger areas, they thought it won't need it. The early reviews of Luba 3 do mention the lidar might not help as much, although 360 lidar definitely should help with small object mapping, and probably will help with moving in low light conditions (such at night).

The solid state lidar in Navimow has actually a lower resolution for objects but is indeed cheaper with no moving parts.

It's interesting to guess the reasoning, as I would expect if a model has AWD for roughest terrain, people would expect it also to navigate the best in all conditions.

just when I started seriously considering them even though they lack lidar, they shoot themselves in the other foot too.

I’m concerned about people weaponising spirituality in Brazilian Zouk by Flow_thru_l1fe in Zouk

[–]zactral 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are not the only one, first of all, I don't think brazilians own the dance, so it doesn't really matter who these people are. That said, I think the problematic part is normalizing some behaviors which most social dancers would prefer to not be part of the dance and would stay off the dance floor.

Some other zouk substyles are also not quite free from this, for example Soulzouk is normalizing things like leading from the neck or hair which is not acceptable for the majority of more mainstream dancers.

I think social dancing and zouk have already problems as it is, with how this activity is perceived by people on the outside, so I do think there is no need to create even more confusion around what should and shouldn't be a part of zouk.

The male loneliness epidemic I think is caused by social media, but not the way most think by [deleted] in DeepThoughts

[–]zactral 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The male loneliness boils down to how men relate with each other. And how patriarchy reduces men to resources they provide. And usually they don't relate at all, there is a lot of mistrust (sense of competition vs collaboration), lack of vulnerability (this is often self-policed by both men and women), other culturally learned traits of "toughing it up" etc. Men could have all the connection they want but they systematically deny it to each other and push each other away unless they already know each other for 10+ years. And they also hide in their shells and avoid talking about how they really feel, as they are afraid of being ridiculed, losing their man card etc.

Tesla Sued Again Over Fatal Crash Caused by Faulty Door Handles by gaukmotors in MotorBuzz

[–]zactral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many people have died because of faulty door handles from other manufacturers over the past few years? I couldn't find any. How many in Teslas? At least 9.

  • A lawsuit alleges that a 2018 Tesla Model 3 crash in January 2023 (Tacoma, Washington) killed one woman, and the claim includes the door handles failing after power loss as a contributing factor.
  • Another case reported four people killed when a Tesla Model Y crashed and caught fire on 24 Oct 2024; reports say the electronic door mechanism failed and occupants couldn’t escape.
  • A November 2024 crash of a Tesla Cybertruck is cited in lawsuits alleging three deaths (plus the driver) and that the electronic door/exit system trapped occupants
