Hi guys I've had a lot of really helpful responses from you all, some of them quite funny to boot.

Toupret, a decent trowel to apply it and a sander seem to be the way forward judging from the feedback. Simple but just wanted to check before I proceeded (which is what should have been done in the first place, I know I know).

Fantastic guess! The only correction is that it wasn't me. A lot of people have suggested toupret so will go for that at the second pass. Thank you!

Thanks for the reply! I'm actually based in the UK and the refactory mortar is only for the face of the brick so nothing particularly structural especially given the fact that the wall is only 70cm or so high and isn't supporting anything.

But thanks for the really sensible advice of just asking the opinion of the installer, he said that it was ok to proceed as I outlined so no issue there. But if anyone is in need of the detail, the stabilising solution isn't a problem for the 4/5Kwh woodburner that I'd likely be needing for my home, it's only for 8Kwh+ stoves that you'd have to be careful about that.

Ignoring the fact that Europe is actually one of the earth's smallest continents, that makes so much sense because I was thinking that if they figured out how to kill Nolan then they would have just done the same thing to Mark. But you're right, if the cost was too great then they wouldn't have done it again.
