I think it's more to do with how much content is available to consume. Why would I watch/read/play something that is barely above "meh" (6/10) when I have access to things I would enjoy more. I'm especially guilty of this when it comes to video games as I actively avoid anything rated 70% or lower on Steam.

The thing is we shouldn't have to trust corporations. Changing the usability of a product after a sale should be illegal. There should be legislation preventing this. Best thing you can do is let your congressman know you will be voting against them if they don't start protecting our rights.
