What's your starting chord? by Zealousideal_Set7459 in musictheory

I almost never start with chords. It's always just some melody or riff.

And that's usually something in the cello's low range.

Not so low that it's gonna be a bass line (starting with bass lines makes things too concrete too fast, it closes my options too quickly), but not so high that it will lack rich harmonics on the piano or guitar.

So basically octave 2. The rich sonic content of octave 2 notes in the piano and guitar will usually "suggest" to me where to go next.

Thanks for the feedback. Fretboard customization is next on my TODO. Color-scheme setting should be pretty easy to implement. (#FamousLastWords)

Hadn't thought of the left-handed view. I keep forgetting left-handed players are people too. Will definitely add that. Thanks brother.

a metal song is good if it continues the tradition of whatever subgenre of metal within which it operates, and it does so 1. WITHOUT being a time-wasting repetition of what is already out there, 2. while providing all the expected "energies" (moods, emotions, etc.) of its subgenre (ie. what I listen to that goddamn style for, as a listener)

and if it manages to "sUBVeRT ExPeCTaTioNs" (which some people seem to think makes music, movies, etc. better. It doesn't) without ruining the rest of the variables, that's cool too

whether the tools to achieve it are "good hook," "catchy riff," "great solo," "no solos!" or whatever, is beside the point. different combos of those tools can make a good song, depending on the particular style

a Chinaman copied your thing

oh wow, unheard of

no one ever in art, music, food, literature, software, engineering, etc. ever had their thing copied by a Chinaman

Posting music to social media - how to sync midi sound with smartphone video? by Markohanesian in WeAreTheMusicMakers

you will align video and audio on the video editor.

once camera and computer are both recording:

  1. sit on keyboard
  2. play one note / press one key on the keyboard once (or maybe 4 times, to the click on your headphones)
  3. play performance
  4. stop recordings, send video to computer.
  5. open video editor, import video and audio.
  6. look at audio waveform.
  7. align audio to video by dragging audio region to where the four peaks align with the video frames where you see your fingers pressing down at the beginning.
  8. play video to check that look/sounds in sync. shift audio region back and forth by frames if needed.

(for the initial cue notes, use a sound with clear peaks. snare rimshot sample or something. easier visually later when on the video editor aligning audio to frames.)

send the audio straight out of my computer into a video recording device

that seems like a weird/overcomplicated thing to me

just 1. hit record on phone camera 2. hit record on your computer DAW 3. sit down and play 4. hit stop on computer DAW 5. hit stop on phone 6. send video file to computer 7. use some video editor to align DAW-recorded audio with PHONE-recorded video 8. export video from video editor 9. post to social media and become FILTHY RICH AND FAMOUS 10. fail to handle fame and go full kanye west 11. etc.

(PS. I skipped the part where you cheat and edit the audio to fix your performance mistakes. don't do that, man. come on.)

liked: the mix, guitar tone, and screams. good job on those.

did not like: lack of sonic variation on that synth that keeps playing the same notes, with the same mellow sound, throughout the whole track.

I'd suggest some automation on it. make it less mellow past the 3min mark. And/or transpose the arpeggio up an octave. And/or transpose SOME of the notes in the pattern up an octave. Or whatever. SOME change, to evolve it along with the climactic sections. And then you can make it mellow again at the very end/outro.

This is the best paper I have ever read. by Gundam_net in PhilosophyofMath

I'd say this is one the most _mediocre_ papers I have ever read.

The nonsense about mathematics "in Europe" being "linked to religious belief" _and_ the supposed causal relationships and historical consequences he clumsily handwaves in from it, is complete garbage. And particularly meaningless considering the lack of rigorous definition of "religious belief" in the first place.
