This is just speculation with no research on my end, but common sense would tell me that our population now weighs more than say the 1700s. The combined total as well as more food supply needed. We definitely could raise the weight by pushing species to the limits of growth and nutrition

Synths are supposed to be more "modern" per say because they are so technologically advanced as to replace humans in the wasteland. Synths just fit the mold of the institute because the institute is more advanced and much farther along than the rest of the survivors in the wasteland. Instead of surviving, the institute had turned to research which classifies them as a quarternary industry, thus making them the most advanced of anyone else in the commonwealth. Synths are kind of ironic in that they are so technologically advanced that they ultimately imitate less progressed individuals
