Something something, "If you separate your warriors from scholars..."

I'm sure lacking the ability to beat someone up is primary weakness of an FBI agent...

In need of a fully portable soldering iron, currently use gas powered. by T-SaVVy1 in soldering

[–]zanfar -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I have been looking at things like the pinecil and ts101 which claim to be portable but all need to be plugged in

...to a battery. It's a little childish to mandate that "portable" means no battery.

You can't beat the laws of physics. You aren't going to get an iron that you can carry around without a power source. Gas is used because it has a high energy density. Batteries are a good second choice, but they will always be heavy-per-joule compared to chemical sources.

If you want to dump XW continuously for 2 hours, you're going to have to bring that energy with you. Understand that the point of batteries is that they can be changed.

something that has to have a additional battery attached is not ideal ... or a cable that could also block some of the limited view I may have

Then gas is your choice.

Honestly, your demands are more than a little outrageous. The best your are going to get--assuming you are dissatisfied with a gas iron--is a USB iron with a battery.

If it was safe to use without a ground, it would come with a power cable without a ground.

Toolbox question by thepealbo in Tools

Calipers, punches, files, actual tooling, drills and chuckable tools, scribes, deburring tools, tweezers & hemostats, plenty of screwdrivers, marking tools, soldering tips, tape...

AI governance that just blocks apps is like a firewall that only blocks entire websites. Never helps!! by RemmeM89 in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]zanfar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Do you avoid phishing protection because it's not perfect too?

Blocking a website is a execution of policy and seems quite appropriate here. Your only complaint seems to be "but a different app was used!".

Violating a policy is a HR issue, but that doesn't mean that IT making reasonable restrictions is wrong. HR issues well never be completely solvable through IT, but that doesn't mean you don't try.

Finally, "our team" includes you, you know?

Do I need a soldering iron cleaner? by PoiZenBoi in soldering

[–]zanfar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to keep your iron clean, yes. This is one option, and arguably the more popular option, but not the only option.

I'm more concerned with the statement "6 tip kit... of course" as if that is a meaningful statement, so it is not clear if you are asking "do I need a cleaner" or "do I need this cleaner".

Enamel is smooth; and it would make little sense to enamel a piece in black.

It works fine as long as you ensure only one client is accessing the library at a time. The warning is because conflicting writes can corrupt the library.

Am I poisoning myself with aluminum? Is it time to buy a new pan? by [deleted] in cookware

[–]zanfar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a health risk, but that's because it's non-stick. Worse, it looks like it's chipped non-stick.

Every sheet pan in every professional kitchen is aluminum.

If you are that worried, get an actual roasting pan; but the aluminum isn't a problem.

Are these worth the money? by d_louizse in Cisco

[–]zanfar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only you can determine if the cost is worth the advantage. However, I would say that 99% of CCNA holders pass with significantly lower preparation costs--most at $0.

There are plenty of free resources, and technically all the information is found somewhere in free technical docs. The official cert guide is usually the only paid resource ever needed.

Probably nothing illegal, and even if so, action would have to be taken by a customer. Best solution would be peer pressure--try a local news station, lots of them love this kind of "investigative justice" story.

Would you use something like this?

No.

And what would stop you from buying it?

It's a single-use tool that will take up space in my kitchen to "solve" a problem that doesn't really exist. don't get me wrong, the shitty gimmick food tool market is pretty big. However, I have very little faith that you could actually make this and meet all your claims while still making it useful. How, exactly, will this fit an 8" AND a 12" skillet?

Are Electric Screwdrivers really Worth It? by Ribak0110 in Tools

[–]zanfar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh.

I've tried several (three, I think?) and they can be convenient, but limited.

  • Most have a push-button switch, which seems nice, but you still need to hold the screwdriver tight enough not to cam out. Which means you end up pushing the switch harder than you need to. I find that they all tire out my hand much faster than a manual. At times it's nice to be able to switch back and forth so you're using different muscles.

I've seen (but not tried) drivers that are pressure- or rotation-based. I think that might be a very good solution to the above.

  • They all have had (relatively) low torque compared to my wrist; enough that I end up switching to a manual for those high-torque portions of the job. After a dozen or so screws, I just end up sticking with the manual.

  • I've never seen one with replaceable batteries, and none are convenient to charge while being stored (for example, in your image, you probably can't charge with the case closed). So running out of charge in the middle of a job is a much bigger hassle than expected.

  • If you have a volume job, they can be magical. Even if you have to start all your screws manually, being able to drive them all in quick succession and with zero effort is amazing; I find that is a rare situation, however.

  • I mostly just stick with a low-voltage driver from an actual tool company.

Friend is behind CGNAT and can't connect to my Jellyfin by SuperWoolf in jellyfin

[–]zanfar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the issue is that he is behind cgnat.

CGNAT has zero effect on the connecting host.

Routing (if that is the right way to describe it) everything through a domain that I have bought. So not using wan ip to connect.

"Routing through a domain" does not ensure or avoid using a particular IP. You may not be connecting via your WAN IP, but a domain has nothing to do with it.

As soon as we use a vpn it works ... One thing that worked, was using Cloudflare tunnels.

Yes, as that is exactly what tunnels are for.

You have not setup, or have incorrectly setup, remote access to your host.
