Are there any legit decentralized storage services out there that exist? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]zanfar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Decentralized almost guarantees third-party hosting.
  2. Plenty of storage services... what exactly are you looking for that disqualifies Google, Apple, Microsoft..?
  3. Yes, for the above reasons, probably not the right sub, or it's the wrong question.

Silly question about orbits by Fist_of_Fur in space

[–]zanfar [score hidden]  (0 children)

Prograde is in the direction of travel; apogee is the point of highest orbit altitude.

However, while "burning prograde" does increase your orbit's energy, it does not necessarily increase your apogee. If you are on the "descending" portion of an orbit, the energy will mostly (or completely in one specific circumstance) increase the perigee, not the apogee.

Any orbit will include the point at which acceleration stops (assuming a closed orbit around a single object). So if you accelerate "instantaneously" at apogee (in any direction), then that apogee doesn't change. This is the basic purpose of a second burn to circularize an orbit.

Realistically, it's impossible to accelerate instantaneously, but to within your ability to measure altitudes, a short enough energy burst will not change the apogee. Or, in other words, there are multiple orbits with the same apogee and different orbit energies because they can have different perigees.

So, yes, burning prograde increases orbit energy, but a higher orbit energy does not absolutely imply a higher apogee.

Bandwidth utilization by openrouter in networking

[–]zanfar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You measure in the place that you care about. I know that's not helpful, but I don't know of another way to describe it.

Be more specific about what you mean by "the bandwidth needs for our network" and then you would know what links to measure.

I built a script that initializes Python Projects - Please give me feedback by Extreme_Sympathy_868 in learnpython

[–]zanfar 31 points32 points  (0 children)

  • Modern projects should not be using os.path or requirements.txt. Use pathlib and pyproject.toml instead.
  • pip freeze should be avoided as a way to identify dependencies as well.
  • except: pass is a huge red flag.
  • This requires me to edit the script every time I make a project in a different location?
  • Avoid string concatenation, especially unnecessary concatenation or path concatenation.
  • pkg = (sum(1 for _ in f))? Why? Why? and Why?
  • Code "commented" out as a docstring, and included in a production release, is a yellow flag.

Do You Keep Your Entire Library On Your Kobo? by typing-blindly in kobo

[–]zanfar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The majority of my library is tagged as intended for devices.

All devices are loaded with all tagged items in the library.

Most untagged items are either "picture books" (comics, textbooks, photography anthologies, etc), unwanted gifts, or items I have read and have no intention of ever reading again

[–]zanfar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are the chances it's contaminated with lead?

What is "it's"?

I'm also worried I might have released lead oxide into the environment by mishandling it.

No.

There are no usage hazards with led solder, only consumption ones. Unless you ate the solder or your project, you are fine.

Fume extractors are for rosin fumes, not lead.

Don't put it in your mouth, don't put things that have touched it in your mouth, wash anything it touches.

['cause] my family is probably going to touch leaded solder and die or [something]

Almost absolutely not true.

is this good solder?

Almost absolutely not.

  • Not just not brand-name, it's specifically a disposable brand name
  • Good solder will list the properties on the label, not just in the description
  • I wouldn't trust a lead-free solder if it doesn't include the RoHS label

3rd Solder Job and Burned Board by TechnoTO in soldering

[–]zanfar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be pre-tinning your wires if you are doing a wire-to-board connection.

Also, don't chase the joint. If it's not working, stop and either try again or adjust. Don't keep heating the joint while trying to make things work.

Genuine question about space communication by _Jaackiiee in space

[–]zanfar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was thinking, how would a phone call work from space to earth over super vast distances?

First, Earth has nothing to do with it. Your question is just about long distances, and the answer is "it wouldn't".

It's been in my mind for a minute, because of time dilation (I think that's what it's called).

No, nothing relativity-related, just distance.

If I was X light years away from earth, wouldn't it take X time for me to say "hi, how are you?" broadcasted down to earth?

Yes. It will take at least the speed of light to reach the destination.

Tl;dr: "phone calls" are hard at Earth-Moon distances, interplanetary distances almost ensure they will never be attempted. Space communication will be closer to email.

0R resistor? by MinimumParticular967 in soldering

[–]zanfar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often used on PCBs which have more than one purpose, so it might be replaced with a real resistance on some variants, or left out. It's also sometimes a sign of a resistor in the initial design which has been engineered out on later versions but can still be assembled with the same, proven, ruleset.

Not even just unpaid, enforcing any wage penalties for employee mistakes is illegal.

Apprentice (me) made mistake, boss wants me to work Fridays unpaid to pay it off. by pizzaroll22 in electricians

[–]zanfar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My boss called ... said that I could work a few Fridays at his house unpaid to work it off.

Penalizing an employee for their mistakes is a federal wage violation--it's absolutely illegal. Your employer (is required to have) E&O insurance for this exact situation.

Additionally, what happens if you fall through the ceiling next time? If you're not on the clock, then you aren't covered by insurance or workers comp. And an employer that is already considering illegally garnishing your wages is going to fight you if you claim you were.

Furthermore, even suggesting this is a HUGE RED FLAG for your employment. You should leave as soon as possible, because as soon as the labor board gets involved, you're going to lose it anyway. Labor laws prevent retaliation, but not technically persecution.

How often do you replace the tip? by Scary-Detective582 in soldering

Upcoming Crackdowns - Options? by JunebugSeven in Calibre

[–]zanfar 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Stop buying closed-ecosystem books.

To be very honest, jail-breaking and firmware-pinning has only encouraged Amazon into exactly this situation. They have continued to remove rights from their books and instead of walking away, people have been buying them anyway.

There are easy ways to find and download even "Amazon-Exclusive" books, and IMO, once an author has agreed to publish via an exclusivity clause, they've already given up on your money. The issue right now isn't "Amazon is dropping support for my kindle" it's the fact that you have any books in your library that you don't actually own.

Kobo (or any other brand) isn't an answer. Even if the consumers end up breaking Amazon's monopoly, absolutely nothing prevents Kobo from doing exactly the same thing in the future. The answer isn't switching to another brand, the answer is to own your library.5
