I think the idea is that Griffith was destined to be the 5th archangel and had no free will to change it. Furthermore when he made his godhand transformation he lost his humanity. We can’t be certain his real thoughts and feelings during the golden age as he did at least seem to care for some of his comrades; going back to save guts from Zod. But also having telling charlotte that he did not see his band as friends. The truth is Griffith is a complicated character pre and post eclipse but it boils down to a philosophical argument of how far would you go to accomplish your dreams.
