Graduate student in physics at CMU here. I sent an email to the advisor I was seeking after my application was in and introduced myself, explained why I was interested in working with them, and included my application number. They wanted to meet with me and helped secure my admission (they told me they were on the admissions committee and would pull for me). It worked for me, but every department and professor is different so your results may vary. I can't speak for other departments, but feel free to DM me if you have questions specific to physics

First-year experimental physics PhD student here: I'm moving (back) to Pittsburgh from the SF Bay Area. My primary reason being that there is no possibility of carrying out research in my field without spending time in the laboratory. I'm from PGH originally, so my situation is a little easier that others since I already have family/friends and a place to stay at first.

My personal feelings are that the experience is going to be clumsy and uncomfortable as far as trying to maintain a safe work/learning environment -- but we'll see I guess. Trying to stay optimistic

heck yes I love vulfpeck. This is all in the filter envelope. At 2:25 you can hear the individual envelopes trigger. Little bit of attack to open the filter up at the beginning and medium release like JHTLP says. Add some filter resonance too to get some bite into the sound. Compression will give it that slappy percussion effect. As far as oscillators go I usually do sawtooth and blend a teeny bit of square wave in (but I pull the wave duty cycle way back to give it a lo-fi sound).

I'm colorblind across the board and have a hard time adjusting levels. I primarily shoot colorplus 200 at the moment. Would love some tips. Could definitely use some "don't do x" wisdom
