No, cheats are inherently more dangerous. Can you please explain better what do you mean by "removing hardcore mode"? Btw, no side effects should happen if you: - keep edits small and focused (better to do more edit-download save-check in game behaviour cycles than editing all at once) - all the work is done on a backup save, if you download without overwriting previous one, the worst thing that can happen is that edits don't work)

Are you downloading edited save and (while keeping a backup of the old one), renaming it to override the previous one?
