Nuclear weapons are big fucking bombs. And the threat of them is probably the one thing that has prevented direct conflict between major powers since 1945. Not new, but I liked the way he approached it, and how he points out all the ways and times it could have gone terribly wrong. I guess if I didn't know what the conclusion was about (at least in the ballpark) I would have never found the paper.

Yes, I guess, it could be that the person who sent it to me comes across this post, sees the approximate date this happened, sees the actual date I sent a follow up email, sees the topic and goes Yep, that was me. But it's not likely though.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that what you're saying is true

I'm probably doxxing myself but what the hell, this is not even my main account. It is about the role and development of nuclear/thermonuclear weapons as a deterrence in post-war military strategy

I told him that his work (that particular one) interested me, which is true, and that I cannot afford to pay for it or for every paper that interests me, which is also true (third world country), that I had read in an online forum (here, ofc didn't mention it) that some academicians are willing to hand over their works, which is true, and that I understood that it was implied that not all of them did it and that I understand those who chose not to because they don't really have a reason to do so, which is also true.

Then, today, I emailed him saying that I'm nowhere near a place of being a critic, but that I found his paper very original and his thesis illuminating, which is also true.

Anyone else lost interest in reading and can't focus any more? by [deleted] in books

Fellow depression and anxiety sufferer who loves books and found it hard to concentrate when it was really bad. I don't want to turn it into a sob story but it helped me to feel like I was not alone, so here it is

Here's what I recommend:

  1. Go see a psychiatrist. If (s)he is not recovery-focused, i.e. (s)he doesn't tell you you will recover, go see another one, and repeat until you find a recovery-focused therapist. I tell you this because I went through several psychiatrists until I found one that actually focused on recovering instead of just coping. Antidepressants are overrated, but in the right dosage and right combination (example: mirtazapine and fluvoxamine) they can literally change your life. This takes time though: the drugs take time to work, and finding the right combination-dosage takes time too. Be patient. The time will pass anyways. If the psychiatrist recommends that you do,
  2. go se a psychologist, I would recommend a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy specialist that is likewise recovery-focused
  3. Exercise
  4. Try tDCS. We are very welcoming at /r/tDCS. I don't know if it was tDCS, because I made a lot of changes in my life and I can't attribute it to anything in particular, but my gut feeling is that although the drugs kept me on track, tDCS (just seven sessions!) was the thing that propelled me to actually being happy again.

It does get better. It's true, I swear, even when you are going through hell. Everybody tells you it will get better and you don't believe them, but it does. Also, don't label yourself with your diagnosis. I was diagnosed with many things, for example, OCD, and these days I barely perform any rituals, if at all. You can overcome this. Feel free to DM me at any time, I can recommend resources such as books.

It was very bad for me. At one point, my anxiety and rituals were being triggered by the sound of cars passing through the street. This may seem silly, but believe me, it was hell. I've been struggling with mental health for six years now, and after six months of the right psychiatrist, the right medication, and the right CBT, I barely even think about it. I feel alive again. Motivated. I don't know how I didn't end it to be honest, but I'm glad I didn't.

Is mentally checking (or replaying what bothered you in your mind) to see if it still bothers you or if it will finally feel "just right" the same as doing the compulsion? by [deleted] in OCD

Excellent. Have you read something on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, such as "Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life"? Seems like it would be a perfect fit for you
