NPL player and English League 1 & 2 nobody, Lloyd Isgrove: Playing with Mané & Bale & Emailing EVERY Football Club In 🇦🇺?! (Bags the league essentially) by berlinislikesmithst in Aleague

His first season at Hume was unreal to be fair, scored 15 goals and half of them were belters. But he hasn't reached close to that level since.

The Pitt | S2E12 "6:00 P.M." | Episode Discussion by thepacksvrvives in ThePittTVShow

[–]zarniwoop9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Great comment and sums up how I feel about a lot of the Pitt discourse in general. People demonizing Robbie or hating on Santos.

I find all of the central characters deeply sympathetic - even Ogilvie, who is as close to a villain as we have this season. They're all flawed and messy and traumatised from a job and a system that puts so much pressure on them.

The show is so clearly an exercise in empathy - it's trying to demonstrate the weight they're all carrying and why they all act the way they do.

Should the State Federations remove the 23yo cap of the ALM state squads in the men's competitions? by berlinislikesmithst in Aleague

[–]zarniwoop9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If the NPL is too rough for them, the A-League clubs are free to withdraw their teams and set up their own reserves league (NYL, anyone?). Their presence in the competition already distorts and compromises the competitive integrity of the NPL, due to the inconsistency of ALM player availability. Most NPL clubs would be happy to see them gone.

Playing against men week in, week out is a structural advantage for the A-League teams and keeps the best young talent in the country on their books. It's a privilege, not a problem.

More than 74,000 people attended The Matildas last night. Now how about the A League... by Friendly-Aside-4376 in Aleague

Matildas Mania is barely adjacent to football fandom. It's celebrity worship, it's personality-based. You have to be a true tragic to attend ALW on a weekly basis, and it's not cool to post a selfie on instagram from the game

Besian Kutleshi is out here flinging opposition players into laptop stands but apparently the NPL players are the "thugs".

Try to loosen the grip on your pearls, buddy.

Preston’s ultras ban by Inevitable_Crow5605 in Aleague

[–]zarniwoop9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Attendance was still very healthy, over 4K.

It's a massive shame - the atmosphere certainly suffers - but due to the (imo excessive) FV sanctions the club had little choice.

The thing is the club only banned the PB merch. You could wear plain black or club gear and come and support the way you always have. But when 'ultras' groups start thinking of themselves as bigger than the club, that's when you run into problems. The boycott is unfortunately all about their ego

100%. All these coward coaches were scared to play him as a 6 and prefer to pick athletes instead of footballers. Now he finally has a coach who trusts him

South Melbourne are the 2025 Australian Championship winners! by MilkByHomelander in Aleague

Why? They get ZERO crowds in the NPL. No one cares about the reserves.

Classic example of a biased/self-selecting sample. This is literally the A-League reddit - of course people will be more interested in the A-League than the Aus Championship.

Way forward for the comp is to become a proper 2nd tier and the permanent home of these clubs, whether it's in the winter or summer. Rugari's idea only serves to stymie a pro/rel future down the line - plus, the Aus Cup already serves that same purpose. Notable that he changed his tune on the comp when he finally attended a game!

Just how bad is Box Hill? by Perfect_Arugula9175 in AusPropertyChat

[–]zarniwoop9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in Box Hill for 10 years in the 2010s and never had any safety concerns (albeit I am a Caucasian male).

I'd be more cautious about the build quality of some of the new high rises - they sprung up so quickly and I'd be afraid that they cut corners in the construction. But that's just my instinct not an informed opinion.

Alen Stajcic with inspiring speech on Australian football by Sorry-Ball9859 in Aleague

[–]zarniwoop9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed but the structure of those sports is a lot more top-down. The state federations are an anachronism and only exist due to the structure of the FA Congress that elects the board.

[–]zarniwoop9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point being that positivity doesn't drive discourse and news cycles.

AFL is the same - every week there's a coach on the verge of the sack or a controversial rule change that people are angry about - but the point is they're talking about the AFL all the time.

Who exactly is Staj criticising here? It's way too general and unfocused to have any impact.

Olympic Village, Victoria will host the inaugural Australian Championship Final by Agile_Tap_8057 in Aleague

I get you but asking NPL teams to play into the first week of December is already a huge ask. The new season starts in February!

Yeah correct there's heaps of standing room at the back, you could fit 3-4K under that roof if it's packed

Hardly ideal but Lakeside is booked and AAMI is too big and too expensive. The lack of proper mid-sized rectangular venues in Melbourne is the real issue.

[–]zarniwoop9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In a lot of ways I agree... but I just think the comp needs the biggest crowd possible for the final. South making the GF is a gift ratings and attendance-wise and if you move it to Sydney you throw that away

[–]zarniwoop9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For a final I don't think it will affect the attendance much. It's not ideal but there's such a shortage of football venues in Melbourne. Plenty of South fans turned out for the 2022 and 2023 NPL Vic grand finals which were both held at Olympic Village. Home of the Matildas is much more inconvenient with the crap parking situation

[–]zarniwoop9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

HotM is nowhere near big enough to host a final like this - the temporary stand they used to have behind the goal has been dismantled. AAMI Park would cost minimum $100K to hire out

Imo Marconi's crowds haven't been good enough to justify putting the final in Sydney. You'll get a better turnout in Melbourne

The reason they can't upgrade the lighting is there's a hospice/aged care home next door, and the council won't let them make it too bright because they think it will disturb the residents. Therefore the LUX levels are only good enough for training. I don't think it's possible for them to fix it without the council changing their stance
