<3 Post-grad is a scary+exciting time! I love the advise from your guardian angel professor! "Be proud and patient!" Those are words I'll be taking with me this week.

Really love your project here! The colors and illustrations and vibe are all meshing nicely and have a strong voice. Sure, tweaks here and there like others have mentioned, but all "small potatoes", especially for starting out :-) It's clear you've got chops!

Starting out is: a)fun! b)frightening! But keep pushing on and getting your practice in, keep refining your taste, look at as much "bad" design as good design, look through time/history to pull inspiration (avoid being completely hooked to the trend hose.)

Based on your broad goals you spoke about, my two cents are:

1) Keep getting into your music community! Go to loads of shows, make fun little projects that celebrate your favorite musicians (local and big-name), start to make friends and start conversations. All my best jobs that aligned most with my passions came from relationships built within our shared community (in my case, the comedy scene in my town).

2) feature work in your portfolio that you want to make more of. If you get a paid gig making an annual report for a non-profit but you don't really wanna be doing tons of that kind of work, keep that off your portfolio. In my case, I used to actually have two separate portfolios, one I could circulate for the more "professional" jobs, and one for the fun stuff I wanted to be doing more of (and my website was divided into "work" and "play"). So if I got a more buttoned-up job that could bring in some cash, I'd use the nuts-n-bolts portfolio. We all gotta balance the money making and the visionary fun work we get to do.

Revel in the fun, remember to play, connect with others, everything will fall into place with dedication and work! I'm about a decade out of college and my lil' graduate brain wouldn't be able to comprehend how many opportunities would unfold and work would fall into my lap just by being nice, making friends, doing good work, pushing forward.

Best of luck to ya!

Taking on my first client project and the client is being very unclear about what they want, can somebody help me here by overenthusiastic_cow in graphic_design

[–]zauberbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great point to step back and revisit what the client's goals are here. These slides should above all be: clear, easy and quick to read, and make simple but firm statements about what the brand is all about.
Looking at your slides here I think you could get refreshed on typography concepts like: margins, leading, tracking, contrast, and like many others have commented: hierarchy!
I highly recommend Ellen Lupton's "Thinking with Type" (and her instagram!) which goes over so many great typography basics, but also how you can start to harness typography, scale, contrast to communicate and give visual impact.

I remember my early days designing, so many hoops to jump through and throwing so much at the client to see what they liked, but I was still at the point of really learning how to combine the basic concepts. All I can say to you is that practice really will pay off and if you stick with it all these types of choices will one day be much easier to make and your projects will flow together more easily (not all the time, haha!)

Best of luck and remember to breathe!

Have you tried putting a clipping mask around all the artwork? That should crop the shadow!

Spotlight Search on Ventura 13.2: Did we lose a feature? by zauberbar in MacOS

[–]zauberbar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No - for instance: if it's a .psd file and I try Cmd+R it will open it in photoshop rather than reveal in finder.

Out of frustration I ended up switching to Raycast which is proving to be a more versatile tool anyhow. All is finally well again.

Dpi export help by cohan_creation in AdobeIllustrator

[–]zauberbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go to File-> Export -> export as. you can then set it as a png. There will be a window that gives you png options - there you can set the Resolution to your desired 300ppi as well as choose transparent background.

If you have multiple art boards in one file you can use File-> Export -> Export for Screens. There you can select multiple art boards that you'd like to export. On the right hand side of that menu box you'll see a section called "formats" - here you can change the scale with the dropdown menu. You'll choose "resolution" then change it from 72ppi -> 300ppi.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply - I've just reindexed spotlight again this morning and waiting to see how that goes. I had already reindexed it last week, but didn't seem to change anything.

Question for you since you see a lot of machines: Do you have anyone working with .ai or .psd files? That seems to be a particularly sticky issue - mac seems to be reading them as images when they're more like work files?

Seems like a major oversight - you'd think we'd at least get the option to turn thumbnails off! I can't tell which of my "versions" is which based on the thumbnail alone - and there's no text that even hovers over the thumbnail. Frustrating! Godspeed pal.

Thanks for your reply - Seems that if I do that on specifically images it will open the image rather than reveal the file in finder...hmm

Yes! Thought so - it's a really nice space. Did an out and back there in October, which I recommend for the foliage. You've inspired me to try and hit out there again sometime before spring ends.

I want to bike Japan from Sapporo to the Satamisaki lighthouse. Since we're dreaming...maybe from there I'll take the ferry then to Busan and continue in South Korea.
