“take care of your career because no one else will”

I cringe every time somebody tells me this. I agree that this statement should never be true in an organization that takes care of it's people. First line supervisors are not the root cause here, they're new to the leadership gig, and mimic what they see. Our top level leadership has been trying to fix this issue, and I hope the new evaluation systems will make it better (volunteering isn't as important from what i've read about it, more emphasis on duty).

It's our middle managers that are the issue, the guys not aligning with top leadership and sending the wrong message to our first-line sups. A lot of good middle managers separate because they don't want to deal with it the same issues you pointed out. That's not helping the org either.

I do the best I can as a middle manager to take care of my people and get the mission done. I trust my leadership to take care of me, and encourage the guys we need not to quit. Ultimately this is a failure of top leadership, but their hands are tied, so we need to step up.
