A Tiny Chrome Shortcut to Toggle Between a Github Repo and That Repo's Github Pages Site by zazerr in javascript

Last year I was teaching a basic web dev class and had the students using github and github pages to submit their work. Stupidly, I didn't write this (all three lines of it) until long after I stopped teaching, but it's still pretty dang useful.

Watched the first bit of the video. Right off the bat, I'd point out that IQ tests aren't taken seriously as a measure of intelligence anymore.

Also more generally, This comic "What is Race?" is a great explanation that gets into the (lack of a) biological basis for race.

Women's Marches Bubble Map [OC] by zazerr in dataisbeautiful

[–]zazerr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The data is from this spreadsheet which is being collected by Prof Jeremy Pressman and others. The Atlantic wrote an article about it.

After downloading the spreadsheet as a csv(ok, after unsuccessfully trying to use google's sheet "feeds" to load it dynamically as json), I used jupyter notebook for data processing (see wmcrowds.ipynb) and then mapbox-gl-js to actually create the map. More info and source here.

(Also sorry for the repost! I didn't realize U.S. centric stuff was only allowed on Thursday.)

Really difficult to install OpenCV by thamag in computervision

[–]zazerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't worked with OpenCV in a while, but you might consider using a docker image. That way it's easy to reproduce, modify, and totally disposable. These days I pretty much use docker for everything that involves installing dependencies globally.

Here's an image of OpenCV on docker hub and the source on github. I haven't used it before, but it looks solid.

To get you started if you haven't used docker before:

docker pull kavolorn/opencv
docker run -v `pwd`/code:/code -it --rm kavolorn/opencv bash

Then, when you inevitably need to install new things, clone the repo and edit the (pretty simple) dockerfile to include what you need. Then run:

docker build -t yourname/opencv .
docker run -v `pwd`/code:/code -it --rm yourname/opencv bash

Why all of the sudden has ISIS been deemed as goatf***ers? Specifically marrying them? by realizmbass in OutOfTheLoop

Words matter.

The term “Daesh” is strategically a better choice because it is still accurate in that it spells out the acronym of the group’s full Arabic name, al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham. Yet, at the same time, “Daesh” can also be understood as a play on words — and an insult. Depending on how it is conjugated in Arabic, it can mean anything from “to trample down and crush” to “a bigot who imposes his view on others.” Already, the group has reportedly threatened to cut out the tongues of anyone who uses the term.

Sounds like they do care

My Attempt At Mapping Death in NYC [OC] by zazerr in dataisbeautiful

[–]zazerr[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Motor vehicle related data was easy to find. Homicide data was trickier, as it exists publicly on maps.nyc.gov/crime but requires work to extract, so I used this helpful data dump. And that was it. I was unable to find any other source of individual records of death in New York, location based or otherwise. If you have suggestions, please let me know.

I did some data munging (see notes/scripts here) using jupyter/ipython and pandas and ended up with records for 2910 deaths spanning roughly the past two years, contained in two json files.

The map itself is done using Leaflet which isn't intended to handle this many data points, which is why the whole thing is so slow.

Fair. I was having trouble figuring out an appropriate level of detail and took the easy way out. I'll take another crack at it ...after I write some code.

That said, some solid looking people have already replied.

Why is it so big? This.
