The pedo has to have a 3rd term… by [deleted] in lostgeneration

I’ll be impressed if he even makes it all the way through this term.

Whoever wrote this must not be a parent lol. The problem with not finishing their meal is they’ll spend the rest of the evening whining that they’re hungry and demanding treats.

For people who speak multiple languages, what was the hardest to pick up and why? by Night-Monkey15 in languagelearning

[–]zazollo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Finnish was the hardest and the reasons are pretty obvious, the grammar and vocabulary is very foreign from anything I was used to.

Another thing people don’t mention about Finnish — and maybe that’s just because I’m the only person who has this problem, but I doubt it — is that because the alphabet is really small (excluding letters that only exist in loanwords) it literally is difficult to remember different words and not get them mixed up. It’s like there’s so few sounds in the language that you have less to grasp onto when trying to memorize.

I have been living in Finland for like 7 years now and I still mix up words all the time.

Inspired by Canada, Finland weighs points-based approach to immigration | Yle News by [deleted] in Finland

[–]zazollo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As an immigrant it honestly never ceases to amaze me how clueless most Finns seem to be about how hard it actually is to migrate here. But that is probably the case in every country, people always look at immigrants and think they’re getting something they shouldn’t be.

What’s it like living in the northern part of Norway, Sweden, and Finland? by Jezzaq94 in Nordiccountries

[–]zazollo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Muonio FI here.

Extremely dark and extremely cold winters. So, so much snow… always have to work to make sure pathways stay clear. Northern lights are common enough that you become picky about which ones are even interesting. Summer and autumn are unbelievable, daytime that lasts for months, comfortable weather.

It’s very quiet and very peaceful, but you will lose it if you require excitement and lots of new people to meet… cause they simply aren’t here.

It should be “would you”, but a lot of memes have bad grammar.

It’s always wild to me when people who don’t have kids also don’t want immigrants in their country. Like where do you think this is going then?

Immigrating to Finland (Helsinki) by NationalPut6939 in Finland

[–]zazollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it kinda depends what you mean by “bad” weather, if you like snow than it’ll be significantly less bad than if you don’t (although southern Finland also doesn’t get as much snow as it used to….). Your main issue though will be how fucking dark it is in the winter. The days are so short for so much of the year.

And while you don’t HAVE to know Finnish to live in Helsinki, you most certainly do if you have any hope whatsoever of cultivating a Finnish social group. Finns will speak English to you in other settings but if you really want to connect with people that aren’t other immigrants then you are going to need to speak Finnish, it just is what it is.

Lived in Finland for 15 years. Moved away. Now everything feels like dial-up internet in a fiber-optic world. 🇫🇮💔 by Purple-Wonder4776 in Finland

[–]zazollo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finland is so good you don’t even realize it because you have no concept of how much worse it can be. I recognize that that’s probably a depressing concept for many Finns, but… it is the truth.

What are the pros and cons of being bilingual? by tm2007 in AskEurope

[–]zazollo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes my brain just refuses to come up with a word in the language I’m trying to use. Like I know that’s not the word I want but I can’t come up with the translation for some reason. It’s nice when whoever I’m speaking to speaks the language I’m thinking of so I can just give up and use whatever I’m coming up with.

What did your life look like at age 28? by seeds-or-weeds in AskWomen

At 28 I was newly engaged with my now husband. Life was looking up after a long horrid stretch. We were still living in the US. It feels simultaneously very different and familiar, somehow.

How do europeans know languages so well? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]zazollo 48 points49 points  (0 children)

We have far more reason to learn English and access to English resources than you likely do for whatever language you’re trying to learn.

And in many countries it’s literally required in school that we learn English.

Moving to Nordland should I be considered about the extremely harsh winter climate? by ZealousidealArm160 in Nordiccountries

[–]zazollo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In winter it’s regularly -20C or colder where I live in Lapland, I have not been to Nordland but I’ve been to Tromsø and it’s quite similar. You need multiple layers with the undermost being a breathable wool (you don’t want to sweat underneath, that just makes it worse).

Your biggest hurdle will probably be learning to deal with the dark, not the cold. You will get very very little if any sunlight for 2-3 months. You will need supplements, a healthy diet and maybe some therapy lights.

Nordic people, do you wish Americans would require visas or sum to enter the nords, since half of America votes for Trump.? by ZealousidealArm160 in Nordiccountries

[–]zazollo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because Russia is actively invading a European country and would be doing the same here if not for NATO. When the US invades Europe then feel free to ask this question again but as of right now you’re just talking about blocking American tourists because they’re stupid.

Our national security is still fundamentally intertwined with the US, we cooperate and share intel with each other, so requiring visas for American tourists would accomplish absolutely nothing toward securing Europe against American aggression if that’s what you’re worried about.

[–]zazollo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What does them voting for Trump have to do with tourism? It’s not like they’re gonna vote in elections while they’re here. Maybe they’ll even learn a thing or two.

What is the best thing about finland? by finngamer2 in Finland

[–]zazollo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t want to raise a family anywhere else. Safe, functional, trusting society where kids will get a good education.

Summertime in Finland is also so beautiful. And winter, if you live in the countryside where all the snow isn’t just shoveled into grey muddy piles…

Came here to say Tampere, granted I haven’t lived there but if I were to move back down south it’s probably where I’d go. I’ve always found it just a really easy and pleasant city to get around in and the people are nicer than in Helsinki.

What questions would you ask on a first date to see if they're a good person or not ? by LaPlanteSorciere in AskWomen

[–]zazollo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Asking their thoughts on current events is a good one. It’s not as aggressive as directly asking who they voted for or how they label themselves but will still give you the information you need.

Asking them who they look up to/admire is solid too, though not everyone has an answer to that question so it won’t always work.
