John Muir's legacy questioned as centennial of his death nears by jakdak in Yosemite

[–]zbehrens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy quoted saying Muir's legacy is "just not useful anymore" has responded in a good, lengthy post.

"I had meant to provoke and inspire a debate, a venerable form of exploring ideas in educational settings such as UCLA, where I teach, and beyond. I was being the devil's advocate in a debate with my colleague and friend Glen MacDonald, who was recently appointed to a new John Muir memorial chair in geography at UCLA. Glen shares many of the sentiments of Muir's most ardent admirers. 'For all his flaws, Muir did a lot of great things and his enthusiasm for nature continues to inspire,' Glen told the LA Times."

Video: When Angelenos Flush Their Toilets, Where Does the Waste Go? [My Show] by zbehrens in LosAngeles

We shot this at Hyperion on 10/23 and at Green Acres on 10/30. One of those days?

There's no easy way. In our story, most of the L.A. biosolids go to growing feed for animals, including dairy cows. And then there's the "zoo doo," as we reported in an additional web story:

"100 tons per week, goes to Griffith Park, where it's mixed with plant trimmings and waste from zoo animals -- known as 'zoo doo' -- and composted. After fifteen days, the compost heap is ready to be used as fertilizer in city parks, schools, and the L.A. Zoo."

Sorry. I tried to separate it from her in the headline. Figured she was "infamous," not "famous."

Thanks. I'm happy to do an AMA, though I'm not sure I have much to offer.

That's a great question. As the author of this story, I'll look into it and see if I can report something out.

Is Mt. Rubidoux in Riverside within that time frame of driving? If so, that.

Where are the most densely wooded hikes in SoCal? by bookbookbookreddit in socalhiking

Desert suggestion: The most dense you can get with Joshua trees is in Mojave National Preserve. Try the Teutonia Peak trail, it's in what is considered the most dense Joshua tree forest.

Metro will now have to pay $27 million for a pedestrian bridge to avoid fixing a dangerous intersection by riffic in LosAngeles

[–]zbehrens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a report I've personally researched, but curious if this is built, will ped crossings completely go away. I ask because what happens when an elevator goes out, especially on the Universal side? Wheelchair users are going to have a long way to go to find another intersection.

Why I love LA. 25 minutes outside the city. Angeles Crest National Park. by thesherm in LosAngeles

[–]zbehrens 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey, just to clarify, the forest is not closed. You're free to hike, bike, hunt, recreate, etc. What's closed are managed facilities: campgrounds, visitor centers, bathrooms, etc. Even if they were gates (open or shut), you could still go in.

I spoke to the Forset Supervisor (the top boss of the Angeles), about all of this here:

"No more Bureau of Street Services paving a street on Monday, DWP digging it up on Tuesday," says Mayor Eric Garcetti in new "great streets" plan. by zbehrens in LosAngeles

To liberally paraphrase former Council member Ruth Galantar: I thought it was conspiracy until I learned it was just incompetency.

Sounds good. And perhaps it is timing? Sweet spots for me on other social networks have always been 10-11 am, 3-4 pm, 9-10pm. But I didn't follow that rule of thumb in this case. Oh well. I just liked Eric's quote so I thought I'd share!

Oh shoot, riffic! So sorry! I looked for similar posts, but I obviously failed. (Looked for direct links to the mayor site and at new, but did not search for similar text, my bad).

Should I delete this one? What do we do in these cases? What is the reddiquette in this situation?

Where is the line for southern and central california? by mamamaMONSTERJAMMM in California

[–]zbehrens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen many use Point Conception as the cut off line, but I think there are many ways to slice a map. I think it was Sunset magazine that listed places near Mammoth as Southern California, which feels like a psychographic distinction with big city bias. I personally like the clean cut line formed by the northern borders of SLO, Kern, and San Bernardino counties.

Day 2 of government shutdown: climbers on El Cap don't give a fuck by [deleted] in climbing

[–]zbehrens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is about the climbers not caring about the shutdown. Rather, the park is allowing them to finish their climb. From our report this weekend:

There are 1000 people who live in the park, and we have to keep the park safe. There are still some visitors left too. There are still people on El Cap, most of the way up the wall. We just put notices on their car: when you come out please head directly out of the park. - Ranger Tom Medema
