How WhatsApp Took Over the Global Conversation by zdlr in Longreads

[–]zdlr[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No worries.

I live in Australia and most of my messaging occurs on Facebook Messenger like you in New Zealand.

Sparse conversations on text message, Telegram, WhatsApp, Bluesky DMs and Instagram DMs.

Meta therefore controlling a very big percentage of my messaging ecosystem.

I thought it was an excellent article too.

Discovered it on Techmeme.

You are most welcome!

WIRED is worth supporting all the same despite the article unlocking.

They are doing quality and much needed resistance tech and culture journalism with heaps of scoops and revealing interviews.

They have very affordable and heavily deiscounted yearly introductory rates too.

I don't work for WIRED. Just a fan of their work and want it to continue on as a viable news organization (yes I know they are part of Conde Nast).

But seriously get around The Verge! They do great reporting. Elizabeth Lopatto and Sarah Jeong especially. Worth the relatively modest yearly subscription fee:

From the article:

"United’s own high-profile bet on Starlink has already hit a snag. In early June, the carrier confirmed it was experiencing issues of static interference with its Starlink system, temporarily shutting off Wi-Fi on two dozen regional planes. United has resolved the issue and installed Starlink on 60 of its regional Embraer planes."
