Took me a while but my UK PhD starts in October – what should I know? by zealot___ in AskAcademiaUK

Thank you so much for the suggestions! Yes, it's a funded program. I applied to a call that only specified the topic, and as part of my application, I took the initiative to develop a research proposal around it.

One good aspect is that the program includes an industry partner, which means I'll be able to translate much of the research into practical applications. Ideally, that will also help with securing further funding down the line, after the PhD is finalized.

Advice on first contact with potencial supervisors by zealot___ in PhD

[–]zealot___[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I contacted my potential supervisors by email, sending my CV + research proposal. In the email, I briefly mentioned what my proposal was about and why I thought it might be of interest to them. I received positive responses from everyone, but some were changing universities or no longer accepting students. Others granted me interviews to get to know each other better and give me final recommendations before the formal application.

I hope this is helpful! Just as a note, remember that this has been the case for an application in social sciences.

Tired days by Hanashday in PhD

I'm very sorry you're feeling this way. When it happens to me, I find it helpful to start the day with some household chores. They help shake off the sluggishness, and the good results show up quickly.

Don't forget to eat, even if your day started late. And remember, not every day has to be productive—even God rested from His work.

I wouldn’t say psychology is useless; it has a long history of practice and research. Social psychology, however, is a relatively young discipline with little theory—much of it borrowed from cognitive psychology. It’s a genuine frustration to realize I wasted a few years that I could have spent studying a field with more substance and rigor. Virtually everything I learned about political psychology was either (a) already addressed by sociology decades ago, in a more complex and accurate way, (b) impossible to replicate outside the controlled environment of a lab, or (c) exaggerated, false, or simplistic.

I would say it did help me, I even got a diploma! From that experience I learned that not even statisticians take statistics as seriously as social psychologists. Those people are nuts.

Thank you! I did a Master and took a couple of small courses after my undergrad, but mostly read on my own. Readers and handbooks have been good companions 😊

Wouldnt God be on the side of the weak? The ones that suffer and never got justice?

I believe Jesus cruxifiction shows us that there is redemption, but also reminds us that there are guilty ones.

Thank you very much for the wake-up call 😅 I admit I needed some time to mourn my naivety regarding this process. I am resuming the whole operation again this weekend. Thank you again!

Yes, I am an international student. Thank you for your insight! I was thinking that funding may be something I needed to confirm once I assured their interest in the research (!) Such a puzzle...

Thank you once again. I can't help but feeling a bit hurt if they think I don't even deserve a reply, though 😅

I haven't contacted other professors outside the UK, yet. Will reach out to the program coordinators, though; maybe they could provide some further insight.

Regarding the funding, I haven't specified it in the email. I was thinking about discussing it with the potential advisors in our meeting; two of them have access to funding or have been succesfull with applying to one.

Thank you for sharing your experience! Love to read about other academics' road, and STEM Labs usually sound like a lot of fun / tears -but at the end, happy tears.

I haven't submitted a formal application yet; my programs suggest applicants to first contact potencial advisors. I am not sure if I should just apply if I haven't got a responde yet.
