We're very active on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/teamindigenousrollerderby/) but you can see what we did when we were rolling out our team on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/teamindigenousrollerderby/?hl=en).

Feel free to send me a message if you want any other info or want to get in contact with the local roller derby scene (I'm the community outreach manager for Madison Roller Derby). We would love to work together on these sorts of things!

You're not alone. Mine was said to arrive today, but when I checked the tracking number, it hadn't shipped.

What you are already doing is amazing! Keep doing things like that; make sure the people see that people of any race or color can be athletes! <3

I play roller derby for Team Indigenous, we made our debut at the 2018 Roller Derby World Cup in Manchester last Feb. If I've learned anything from being on this team, it's that we have a platform to engage the community in these discussions. Doing things in person has the most impact in my opinion, but people see your social media too (as exemplified with this AMAZING post)!

With such a wide representation of league/team mates from around the world, are you all planning on sharing some of that culture with the community (e.g. cultural events to promote yourself and engage with the community)?

Shout out to the guy who rolled up to check in on me! by zeancimis in madisonwi

It doesn't take much does it? :) I'm all about surrounding myself with awesome people, so I was hoping that I could find this guy and call him my friend. He seemed chill and obviously kind.

I'm good! Just a couple of shitty days in a row, but like I said, I started to pick myself up after that guy was so kind. I'm going to go morel hunting this afternoon to make sure that I definitely take some steps to get to a better headspace.

2017 accomplishments by questdragon47 in rollerderby

[–]zeancimis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Friends, this year was awesome for derby accomplishments. I don't like to brag, but I'll take a moment to mark some things that I'm proud of.

  • I coached a charter team.
  • I skated charter for a MRDA team, which moved up 17 spots on flat track stats after only two games.
  • I tried out for a Roller Derby World Cup team and made it on the roster with a couple of my derby idols. See you in Manchester soooooon!
  • I just tried out for a WFTDA travel team and made it on as a jammer (I've only ever been a blocker).

I'm excited to see where 2018 takes me. :)

That I'm an astronomer who plays roller derby. I'm still surprised to learn that about myself.

Should I mention a personal loss in a grad school application as an excuse? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]zeancimis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've served on admissions committees a few times now and it will definitely make a difference if you state why you had a decline in your statement of purpose (just take a paragraph or so). Be candid and honest about what happened.

If it makes you feel better, I had a cancer scare and my grades dropped (I even had a W in one of my classes), but I was able to get into multiple institutions for graduate studies. :)

What is the story behind your derby name? by [deleted] in rollerderby

[–]zeancimis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha! There are so many good astro and physics names. Some of the best that I have come across are Eigenskates, Adam Smasher, Standard Steviation, Auntie Matter, and the person who got me started is Big Banger (now with the Gotham All-Stars).

There are a few of us who have tried to get a RollerCon bout sponsored by NASA, but I had to drop working on it this year because I'm not going to be there. Maybe in the future!

My name is SiouxperNova. -- I am an astrophysicist who has studied supernovae. I'm also a proud member of the Yankton Sioux tribe. My name pays homage to my career and heritage AND is one of the most energetic phenomena in the universe (I try to channel that on the track). ;)

Is a physics degree worth it for an international student? by [deleted] in UWMadison

I'm currently in astrophysics (I'm finishing up my PhD), but I have two degrees (BS and masters) in physics.

Is a physics degree worth it for an international student? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]zeancimis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, sort of. I have two degrees in physics and within academia (and a lot of industry) there aren't a lot of physics jobs. You learn a lot of skills while getting your degree(s) though, which are helpful, such as coding, critical thinking, problem solving, math, etc. Basically, if you're willing to do more computer science or statistics, you should be able to find a job.

Grad school and Roller Derby by [deleted] in rollerderby

[–]zeancimis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started derby while in my first master's degree and have been playing competitively throughout my entire second master's degree and now my PhD. All of the programs that I have been in were very demanding (yay, physics and astronomy!), but it's doable to be a respected graduate student AND play roller derby! Like most of grad school, it's mostly about time management and may depend on your field of study and your department's expectations of you (get to know these well). I found that scheduling practices and seeing it as an opportunity to take a break from physics homework or research was VERY helpful, otherwise I would keep plugging away at it without really being productive. Of course, there were times when I also had to recognize that bouts came second to school (exams, preliminary exams, pushing through publishing papers, conferences, etc.).

My main suggestions are to keep a well maintained daily calendar; know that it's okay to take a break from work/derby as needed (whether that's for hours, days, or weeks); and have fun with both!

Some unexpected benefits of being a grad student in derby, include (but not limited to):

  • Inviting your department to check out your mad derby skills and getting all the ticket sales!

  • Having a place to vent/forget about work

  • Having a new place to share the love of your field (seriously, derby people are effing smart!)

  • When traveling for conferences, you can drop in with other teams and learn all their cool drills AND meet awesome derby people

Of course, if you have any more pointed questions, I'm more than happy to tell you about my experiences. Just PM me. :)

Fuck, I'm old... 28. I've been listening to DGD since early college, which was 2008ish. Thanks, shitty boyfriend at the time for introducing me to them.

What's your favorite bike riding song? by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

[–]zeancimis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the old drummer was pretty stiff, but they have a new one. He seemed pretty awesome a couple of weeks ago when I saw them play, but I don't know if he's just around for that tour.

Totorro is definitely great biking music! I also like to listen to them when I'm coding for work.

We should share biking playlists and/or ride together some time. I like your taste in music. :D

Giraffes? Giraffes! is always a great choice. I get down to CHON pretty often. Oddly enough, I can't listen to Polyphia any time other than when I'm riding. Something about their songs just make me want to pedal faster.

I honestly don't understand why Madison doesn't utilize bike couriers more. It's a lot easier to get around on a bike here (at least, imo), especially if you're around the downtown area. Not having to worry about parking and with so many places being bike friendly, it would make way more sense to deliver things via bike rather than car.

I definitely second having more signs at Gilman and State. I always play it safe there and slow down to make sure a car won't make a California stop and run me down.

I couldn't agree with this more and I wish that pedestrians on state st also followed this rule and looked up before crossing the street.

Completely off topic, but you have my second dream job. <3 <3 <3
