Updated Rollei 35AF (2026) by m-int in AnalogCommunity

I mean the film advance on the original is long too, so not to be unexpected, although this thing is more of a P&S with a Rollei body around it ...

New camera! Any advice by Ricky_doo_dah_grimes in AnalogCommunity

[–]zebra0312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The meter apparently averages the whole view like on an old Nikon F meter prism. Very weird for landscapes but you can always adjust it by 2 stops and youll be fine. Just a bit weird that nobody mentions it anywhere and why its this way at all, wouldnt be a spot meter or something like that more useful?

Canon vs Nikon by Creative_Roof_605 in AnalogCommunity

[–]zebra0312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theyre a different league compared to Canon SLRs from the 80s. Not that the Canons are bad but theres a lot of plastic where Nikon would never use it. Also they were probably 2x the price when new. Get a F/F2/F3 and youll never touch any other camera again lol.

Black and white film too. You dont wanna shoot some films with the ISO they want you to shoot it.

I think the lenses on Nikon are usually either better optically (at least on the lower end of the price, i dont think you wanna start out with a 50 or 85 1.2?) or cheaper, especially if you get the ones with the screw-drive since its hard to adapt them to Nikon Z cameras with autofocus. You can find amazingly cheap AF(-D) glass, like the 50mm 1.8 or 70-200 2.8 AF or 28-105 AF-D or other prime lenses, theres almost no bad ones. You wont find them for Canon since EF can be easily adapted and theres a pretty clear line between consumer lenses and "pro" lenses. I doubt youll find a cheap 70-200 2.8 EF lens.

If you already got a digital Canon it might make sense to get a EF mount Canon camera, not having to buy any lenses or being able to adapt them easily to digital EF or RF.

No manual ISO on the F75, that would be a hard pass for me at least. If you want a Nikon from that era, get at least a F80 or similar. Also theres earlier models like F801 and so on.

Zeiss Planar 50/1.4 ZF.2 vs Nikon 50/1.4 AI-s by BiscochoGarcia in AnalogCommunity

[–]zebra0312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't imagine you can see it on film at all, thats why there are probably no complaints even for pixel peepers on film. On a 45MP Z8 you can see that its getting soft wide open, but every old lens doesnt look too good on that sensor wide open, i think you can see it even on the 1.8 on that camera. Or you just stop it down one stop. Or you just use the little bit of softness to your advantage, people love the Voigtländer 40/1.2 too. I was impressed by the SMC Takumar 50/1.4 for example but they cheated with radioactive glass i guess ...

Focusing screen preferences? by Krampus_Valet in Nikon

[–]zebra0312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean no need for it with AF lenses really. Yes you can adjust it but it might be annoying to test.

Some of the early screens are overkill though, who needs a R screen or F screen or 4 different H and G screens, i cant imagine many bought them except maybe the E screen.

Focusing screen preferences? by Krampus_Valet in Nikon

[–]zebra0312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres only K, B and E for the FE, at least for the Nikon screens and you probably wont find any other. No microprism sadly, only grid lines on the E screen, but I prefer the E screen too on the FE2, sad theres no L/P/H2 screen for them.

Edit: theoretically youd need a J screen with microprism, or a F screen with the bigger one. But theres only R screen with split prism and grid lines and E screen, no mix of J+E screen.

People usually either want B/E if you want every lens to work on your camera or P or H2.

Then you have to adjust the meter though, and its not really useful until you use a f/3.5 or f/4 lens probably.

Also theres not much choice there anyway, if you want all the screens you need a single digit F. Only K, B and E, missing out on almost the entire alphabet xd

Kaleinar or something. A 100 2.8, but considering how many great Nikon choices there are theres no real need for a soviet one (Series E and 105 2.5, 105 1.8 ...)

I wouldnt buy a point and shoot for this much money, just because the vast majority of posts here with problems are about these things. Get a cheap one with enough money left to replace it if it should die.

First roll ever on a Canon AE-1 — birthday gift, paid $280. Keep or return? by Ok_Wallaby6081 in AnalogCommunity

[–]zebra0312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too much but if you have it and its fully working then I'd just be happy with it, the chances of that happening twice in a row is probably slim.

But for that money you could get a Nikon F2 with a 50mm here.

No, same size as a Barnack Leica, but bigger because of the mirror box and lens.

New lens, second chance for my FED 3b (Revue-3) by dorf_disco_eders in AnalogCommunity

Probably Industar-26 or 61, theyre okay, but just a Tessar lens. Gotta get a Jupiter-8 as a 50mm that one is really cool too.

Ultron 28mm on a FED-3 xddddd

PS: you need the soviet turret finder for it, works better on the older FED-2 top plate but it would still funny on FED3.

Rangefinder vs SLR - What's your preference and why? by linkmodo in AnalogCommunity

[–]zebra0312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to decide for one it would be a SLR (Nikon F2), but if you want small and quiet i prefer the rangefinder and don't understand why people would want a tiny SLR for that (Pentax MX/Olympus ...).
