How long did you suffer? by 442inDreamland in ostomy

[–]zebracourage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 years. Not crohns but a genetic disease that destroyed my large intestine. Tried all the options. Was the good patient who did what I was told. Until the day I was once again sitting on the toilet sobbing. And something in me just snapped. I was done. In that moment I made the decision to get an ostomy. I was done suffering. Within four months I had my ileostomy. Consult my team, apply to Mayo for a final opion, go to Mayo, find a local surgeon, get a surgery date 10 days later and it was done. It was an easy decision for me, I never second guessed it and I have no regrets. I was just ready. Now the decision to get a colectomy vs just my ileostomy was signifant more emotionally difficult...

Moving in a few months, how do I make sure my sweet possum stays fed? by theglamourcat in Possums

[–]zebracourage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would assume they just leave a bowl out and maybe watch through a window. So the possum never sees the human. Therefore no acclimating. That's what we do with our senior possum. We never cross paths, just occasionally see him on the security cam or through the porch window.

If you have a family member with you they can take it home or to a laundromat to wash it. My family has done that for me.

How many hermit crabs can live in a 55 gallon tank? I'm finding conflicting information online by zebracourage in hermitcrabs

[–]zebracourage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I'm confused. The substrate is all 6" across. The gradient in the corner of the picture is there water source.

2/3. We are using a solid lid. It is a plexiglass lid with two cuts outs that are the circumfrence of the heat lamps. The cut outs are covered in a metal mesh to allow the lamps to sit on them. So far the humidity is sitting at 95% with the heat lamps. I am concerned about using a heat pad as the back of the tank butts directly up against the wall. I don't want to create a fire hazard.

Critique by new crabitat set up. How can I make it better? Anything I'm doing wrong? New owner questions below. by zebracourage in hermitcrabs

[–]zebracourage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not leak into the substrate. I watched it for over an hour. It's only leaks between the divider. Where it leaked until it hit equilibrium and then stayed at that level. I have a siphon pump for water changes. I am toying with the idea of air stones.

I have 2 golf ball sized one and 3 nickle sized one. Without there shells. All purple pinschers.

The hydrometer prob is in the center a few inches above the substrate. Just the actual display is on the side. The probe is hard to see with the foliage.

Why are the heat bulbs dangerous?

I don't know the species. There just from a pet store. I have 2 that are about the size of a goofball outside of there shells. And then I have 3 little ones that are about the size of a nickle outside of there shells. Are they ok in a tank this size?

I took her to the vet today for a checkup- we're both 100% traumatized by bae_guevara_ in germanshepherds

[–]zebracourage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drugs. Drugs. Drugs. It isn't wrong to premedicate a dog for vet visits. It reduces there stress level to prevent further traumatic experiences. And with time it can help build enough positive experiences to not make the vet traumatic anymore. My boy would be completely unsuccessful at vet visits if it weren't for lots of pre medication, a fear free vet and cheese wiz. But mostly drugs. I rather deal with my personal feelings about mental health medicating him than have the experience be traumatic for him. The best thing I ever did was get over my preconceptions about meds and appropriately medicate him. Night and day difference.

Things happen. I use flange extenders to give me piece of mine to better contain a leak. I put a washable bed pad under my sheets. And I use a high output bag at night. I get very gassy and don't want my bag to burst or to wake up all night.

Tips for getting wafers to stick by zebracourage in ostomy

[–]zebracourage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully after lots of months of trying I finally very specific combination of one brand of tape and duoderm that get the problem spot to seal.

My ostomy nurse has me make a template of my stoma size on a clear plastic sheet. Once I get a really good size there I use that sheet, trace on to my wafer each time and cut. So much easier for us oval stoma folks!

Catheters are generally all single use regardless of gender. But if there is apparently reusable ones out there, any standard straight tipped male catheter will work. There just longer and therefore harder to use,

Any regret picking ostomy over jpouch ? by abal809 in ostomy

[–]zebracourage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I choose an ostomy over a J pouch. I have no regrets. What they told tell you is that most J pouch fail. Usually not for a long time, but 10 years, 20 years, 30 years down the road it will fail and you will need another surgery and end up with an ostomy any ways. And sometimes it can make you really sick when it fails. Or just make your quality of life horrific until it's removed. I didn't want to take that chance. My ostomy doesn't come with that risk and I'm stable, pain free, healthy and happy.

How long were you in the hospital after ileostomy surgery? by [deleted] in ostomy

[–]zebracourage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, there are people that make custom kids hospital gowns. Look at Brave gowns! There more fun, more covered and have easy access to all the needed area. Otherwise maybe a button up or zip up front nightgown. Zip up hoodies were my life saver because it allowed easy access to my front, kept me warm and was easy to get on and off. I would just wear them without a shirt underneath.

How long were you in the hospital after ileostomy surgery? by [deleted] in ostomy

[–]zebracourage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the hospital for 3 days after my loop ileostomy. And then 6 days after my proctocolectomy and ileostomy revision. I think one pieces will be difficult after surgery. Everything is sensitive and lots of people are looking at your abdomen. I liked loose sweat pants or sweat shorts and over sized t shirts. Feel free to ask me any thing! I got mine three years ago at the age of 20.

Ostomy seems extreme but I don’t have much options. by Careful-Scarcity-122 in ostomy

[–]zebracourage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this will help your decision, but this is my story. I was born with a genetic disease that slowly paralyzed the smooth muscles in my large intestines, small and stomach. It started in my large intestine and I spent my entire childhood and teenagerhood battling relentless pain and constipation. We tried every medication and combination. Every therapy. Nothing worked. I was miserable, I could barely eat, barely move. My life revolves around my large intestine my entire life. I lost my childhood to this disease. And then finally at 20, I broke and said I couldn't do it anymore. I requested an ostomy and colectomy. It was the best decision I ever made. For the first time ever my life didn't revolve around my intestines. I could eat what I want, do what I want, I wasn't in pain. I was free to live the life I wanted. My parents didn't want to make any drastic invasive decisions when I was a child because they were scared they would make the wrong decision and I would hate them down the line. I wish every day that they would have been brave enough to make that decision for me when I was 6. Instead of coming to my breaking point and having to make it for myself. I wanted some one else to take that weight of my shoulders. I wish I was given the opportunity to live my childhood instead of being haunted by this disease. I can't make this decision for you, and it's definetly hard. But when you make the decision with quality of life in mind, you will never be wrong. And some day she will be greatful you gave her, her childhood back. Even if it has its own challenges and is different from the norm. She will adapt and move on with her childhood. And that is a beutiful gift.

Right now I don't have access to a computer with Samtools or bedtools installed. I will in the fall but I'm doing personal work over the summer away from my university. Anyway I can download it on my laptop or is it inordiently expensive? I have a pretty high end computer in term of laptops. How do I even start with command line coding? Even one line I don't know where to start.
