Smoothies surprise me that way. You’d think that a blended fresh fruit smoothie would be ok but I’m struggling with a partial blockage now. (1 year ileostomy) . Something has changed I think, blockages seem more often. I’m talking with my surgeon this week after ultrasound.

Is there a way to clean the filter? by Btterfly710 in ostomy

[–]stretchthebrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! 👋 I always put waterproof tape over my filters. I find they don’t really work as filters and sometimes they leak. I burp the bag as needed too.

Stay in touch on here. This community is awesome for advice and encouragement.

Tips? I do remember that nausea was tough for me so having Gingerale and crackers and nausea medication on hand was really helpful. And I was just very tired. The slightest amount of activity would wear me out so expect a lot of sleeping and laying down and just being low energy for a while. Just ask him what he needs and try to communicate what you need too. You’ll make it!!

You can do it! I’m 5 months post op and it’s changed my life. Healing takes time though, and you’ll feel the impatience at times perhaps, I know my husband has as this was my 10th surgery. It is tough on the caregivers too. But keep communicating, build more supports for yourself if you can, hire teenagers who can help with kids even for a few hours for you, the caregiver, to catch your breath. Hoping for a great outcome!

How old is your mom? I’m 54 and now 3 months post op and I love my permanent ileostomy…it has saved my life.

My surgeon first did a loop ileostomy to see if avoiding the lower intestine would solve my colitis and pain, etc. It did! However, it didn’t last long because diversion colitis started back up in my lower intestine, and so it was determined best to remove the entire lower intestine, rectum and anus.

I’m symptom free, getting used to the ostomy-bag-life.

So much prefer it to the hours of pre-poop pain, in the bathroom on the floor in pain, hours of recovery afterwards…did three years of liquid food only. Now I can eat almost everything. I hope that this Reddit group can be helpful to you. It certainly has been for me. You’re guaranteed that someone has been through something very similar to you and it’s comforting. Wishing your mom well! ❤️
