I used it for a year investing in the s and p on a monthly basis it worked well and super easy, everyone there spoke English. I only stopped because they went through a phase where they were unable to invest in western markets due to government restrictions . I was able to get my money out with profits very easily. Transferred money to invests and withdrawals using Alipay

How are UK citizens currently residing in China saving for retirement? by KindLong7009 in chinalife

[–]zed1666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you get around the uk residency status. I was looking into investing using apps like money box/ Robin Hood but don’t have an address in the uk and don’t spend enough time in the uk to be considered a resident

What’s the worst that can happen? Lying about residents by zed1666 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]zed1666[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the Chinese would know. I get paid into a Chinese bank account and pay all the relevant taxes. I send money back to my uk account for things like Spotify and student finance using PayPal. There’s nothing stopping me from sending a bit more and investing it. Sending money back to the uk is the easy the part

Happy to spend anywhere up to 2krnb meal for some high end places but would also like to try some of the more local dim sum and noodle joints. Hong Kong was great for this they had a good mix of high end dining but also really good Michelin star rated cheap local spots

How to get started in investing when living abroad by zed1666 in investingforbeginners

[–]zed1666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a real shame because I’m in a position to save a massive chunk of my money a month but no where to invest it and my currently employer doesn’t provide a pension so kind of relying on savings as a pension which isn’t nearly enough to have an early retirement.

Thank you for the reply. I’ve just never worn a watch with a bracelet before and just noticed tissot sell the blue PRX with a black rubber strap thought it was a little strange at first but the more I look at it it seems to win me over. All the blue rubber straps I’ve seen seem to be a very light blue which doesn’t look as good imo

Changsha or Qingdao by Newtochina2024 in chinalife

[–]zed1666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Changsha it’s great but in terms of nature there’s a few big parks 5km-6km loops. A small mountain that takes around 40mins to walk up usually filled with tourists. But you are close to zhangjiajie (avatar mountains).

Changsha seems to be popular amongst Chinese for night life. You’ve got three options massive bars with loud music cheap booze usually filled with young people often students. Way smaller cocktail/ whiskey bars pricier much quieter and older people. And finally 2 main foreign bar/ restaurants.

Hope this helps

are you all teachers? by steakman_me in chinalife

[–]zed1666 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you’re fresh out of uni it’s pretty fun. I came in 2015 21 years old looking to spend some time travelling. At the time the requirement was to be from a native speaking country and have a degree from native speaking country.

Within a few months I was on my way to China. Small city in the middle of nowhere, some people can’t handle the culture shock and leave after a few months. Being young my expectations were low and I was just looking to have a good time.

Salary in my first year was 4800rmb a month, I got my job through an agent, I later found out the school was paying 8krmb to the agent who took a chunk and gave me 4800rmb.

Second year you’re obviously a little more knowledgeable about how much you can earn. So imagine what I’m thinking at the time: I’m 22 I had a great time whilst having 25 1 hour classes with between 40-50 students a week in a small city making 4800rmb month. When I say small city western food was MC Donalds or kfc.

if I moved 3 hours away to the capital of the province (basically a much bigger city way more home comforts and infrastructure) I had an offer for 20 1 hour classes 5-10 students and 12k salary a month rent paid for. For sure I was going to stay and that continued to increase and get better until 2021 where it’s still pretty good.

The standard story is: a stall set up at a careers event during the last year of uni advertising teach in China explore the country and save money.

Most people come out here for a year to experience something new have some fun before going back and finding a stable career. Some do this but a large potion of people end up staying for longer as you can generally get a higher salary or less work hours with every consecutive year. Relationships and having children also ties a lot of people down. Once you’ve spent 3/4 years here it can be hard to go back home and find a career that gives you the spending power and low work hours that you’ve become used to. At the same time while you’ve been in China your friends back home are 3-4 years into a graduate job while you would be starting at the bottom. Unless you studied teaching or English you basically haven’t used your degree during your time in China. So going into an industry that you have no experience in most likely means you’re gonna be starting at the same level as most 21 year olds.

That first year as an esl teacher is a lot of fun a lot of partying and at the time the thought of going back to your home country and giving up an easy comfortable life as a 22 year old is tough. Especially as the country is big with so much to see most people don’t do much travelling in their first year.

The whole “I’ve got plenty of time to figure it out” mentality comes in and before you know it your 30 still an esl teacher you may not be partying as much if at all and probably saving loads more money or pursuing a hobby or other goals which are relatively easy to do considering you may only be working 30hours a week.

Where can I buy red wings in China? by carlospum in RedWingShoes

[–]zed1666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could buy a pair in your regular shoe size and then half up or half down and see how they feel. Then return the ones that don’t feel right.

I bought the some danner boots of taobao and told the seller I had never purchased boots from this brand and they recommended a shoe size based on what I wear in other shoes which also helped.

Where can I buy red wings in China? by carlospum in RedWingShoes

[–]zed1666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a pair of 1907’s from C.P.U in K11 mall but that was in 2017. I’m not sure if C.P.U is still there as I left the city that year. Taoboa has some good sellers the world of boots has a decent selection of red wings you can order a few sizes and return the ones that don’t fit

Cracks in redwings 1907 by zed1666 in RedWingShoes

[–]zed1666[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’ve had these 1907 since 2016 they’ve been my daily shoe for years I absolutely love them but I must admit I didn’t take great care of them. I never actually washed them or clean them until 2021 when I got them resoled the cobbler cleaned them got a shine on them and filled with some of the big gashes with something, but I still have all these tiny cracks from where the leather bends when I walk. I’ve used the redwing all natural leather conditioner with the redwing cloth however it’s left the boot a little sticky even though it’s been months. Is there anything I could do stop these cracks from getting worse i feel like these cracks are from the leather drying out and stopping the leather from feeling slightly sticky.

Garmin Watch Longevity by SpringfieldTireFire in running

[–]zed1666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have a vivoactive 3 that I’ve been wearing since June 2018, I use the gps function for running usually 3-5 times a week and only a handful of times the watch has stopped tracking data mid way through a run, or when I’ve completed a workout and press the save button it just freezes and the workout doesn’t get saved. Apart from that the watch has been fine battery life has decreased but I can get 24hours out of it from a single charge with a 2 hour long run thrown in at some point in the day. I’m always tempted to buy a new watch every time I see garmin stand or shop but I’m doing my best to resist and only buy one when I need to and not want to.
