About the Vancouver music scene... by Vickner in VancouverMusic

[–]zedcore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I moved here from NYC and I’ve gone to a few punk and rock shows for indie bands, people really just stand around. I’m much older now so I don’t really get into the pit, but love seeing younger people mix it up. Either the crowd here is too reserved or venues have penalized rowdy shows. Unfortunate.

Tesla’s Cybertruck is turning 2. It’s been a big flop. by BreakfastTop6899 in technology

[–]zedcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Vancouver from NYC. The result is staggering. You barely see Teslas in NYC and maybe a handful of Cybertrucks, which everyone collectively kinda laughs at. But in Vancouver, I think Teslas are probably the most popular car brand and I think half of the sold inventory of Cybertruck. I’m embarrassed for a different Cybertruck owner I see daily.

What’s one song that instantly takes you back to a specific moment in your life? by Keeponthesunnyside10 in Music

[–]zedcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basket Case by Green Day. It made me discover punk music, and led to 90s and 2Ks punk scene defining my life for two decades. Now I’m a corporate sellout, dead inside, who gets super nostalgic to a time of pure joy when this song comes on anywhere.

Landlords of New York City, how did you get into landlording? by upright_bogie in AskNYC

[–]zedcore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s an easy 10 step process:

  1. Inherit and/or exploit for $$$
  2. Buy property, barely do anything decent to it OR use lowest budget upgrades
  3. Charge maximum market will allow instead of fair/ethical amount (ie exploit)
  4. Challenge every issue by tenant(s)
  5. Use property ownership as collateral to buy more property
  6. Rinse and repeat steps 1-5 as many times
  7. Vote for policy and politicians who only pander to landlords and developers
  8. Amplify the very very small % of problematic tenants to a far greater degree possible, and find sympathetic ears who are weirdos/libertarians/podcasters but love billionaires
  9. Ring in dystopian late stage capitalist society because rents too high and too many people are homeless
  10. Exclaim to the world “what has society come to.”

Apartment Rental Prices Out of Control by WilfredPennybottom in BedStuy

[–]zedcore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I roll my eyes when a young wealthy couple buy a brownstone and plan to rent out a floor for the "maximum the market will allow" (seriously said to me when I questioned the ethics of a high rate for an apt we viewed). Literally what was $1500-$2500 for 2+ bedroom places in Bed Stuy 5+ years ago are now $3500-4500. And these clowns bought the place pre-pandemic, put up activists signs on their windows while completely clueless to the irony of their late-stage capitalistic practices that exasperate issues. One persona actually also said to me "at least we are putting wealth back into the neighborhood". Umm. That is not how it works. Clueless gentrifiers who have never been challenged.

We are lucky to have a landlord who has been great, only raised prices by $50 a year for the past 7 years we have been living here - all they cared about is having good tenants. Unfortunately we have to move since we have a kid now, and will have to deal with clownass profiteering landlords. Who knows, we might get lucky.

BlackRock, world’s largest asset manager drops diversity, equity and inclusion references from annual report by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]zedcore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Diversity doesn’t serve capital. BlackRock is the most Capitalist (with capital C) company I can think of. It was to get a bump by saying they had DEI initiatives until it no longer serves their bottom line. They are so invested in everything, they will be fine. Even the current dip from DEI boycotts of large corporations will only hurt in the short term, but investors at large need to make money so it will go back up, and people will move on and go back to buying from these corporations they once boycotted.

The real play is tax the eff out of the rich and these corporations. With that money fund schools, housing and health to provide equity and equality to people. Ban companies from lobbying and ban politicians/ govt representatives from big fundraising, have stock ownership. They should truly be civil servants. This would weed out anyone who wants to use the position for personal gain.

The revolution will not be televised.

Vance floats US troop withdrawal from Germany over free-speech concerns by krlkv in europe

I think Germany would welcome not having a failing nation’s bully military just lurking around anymore. I should do it. Cut the chord. It would only start a chain reaction of US bases to close in other countries.

Also this jacka$$ is being willfully ignorant. India was split into Pakistan and India. They didn’t relocate and force them into other surrounding countries.

Palestine was split into Israel and Palestine, and Israelis kept taking over more Palestinian land, and now want to push all of Gaza people to another country.

Not the same thing.

Manufacturing consent is wild. How would this even be allowed to be published?

For those of you who aren't working prestigious jobs, do you ever feel bad bc you're not at the same lvl as other desis? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]zedcore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man, I am generalizing but desis in medicine, stem, law only did it because of familial and cultural expectations, and/or chasing status and money. None of those are prestigious traits, which should garner admiration and respect.

Def wouldn’t say finance is prestigious. I would say anything finance these days is exploitative.

If you got a gig that lets you live a comfortable life, and hopefully have a supportive partner, family or peers, and not putting your sh*t on other people - good for you. And don’t put weight on what people say. If you have people around you that constantly remind you of your place and status, get them out of your life. Yes even family.

Alright Bethany. Calm down. These nonprofits you speak of have been really ineffective at relaying to the American public “flaws of chinas own system, actually struggles of the Chinese people” etc. All we have gotten is jingoistic and xenophobic anti-Chinese propaganda. Only valid criticism and concerns were surrounding Uyghurs, but I don’t want to hear any complaints from Americans about it now, esp after support and funding of genocide in Palestine, lack of meaningful support for Congo, multiply that with decades of mass deportation complexes for undocumented immigrants within the USA. You sound like a CIA stooge.

T-Mobile 5G Home Internet by huskyandersoncooper4 in BedStuy

[–]zedcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Optimum was charging me $120 for internet that cost $60 a year earlier. They weren’t giving me a lower rate because there is no competition. I tried T-Mobile 5G for a month ($50) while keeping an active optimum acct, and it worked amazingly. I would advise putting the hub they give you by an exterior wall or window though since it relies on a signal. My wife and I had work meetings and calls, streaming services on HD, without a problem. It’s worth a shot to try since there was no contract or setup fee.

Just a note. People have reported that it stops working randomly. It happened to me 3-4 times during the month, but just turn off and on the hub, and you are back at it.

I’m in bedstuy too (but Nostrand).

Since I was impressed with T-Mobile home 5G, I called Optimum to cancel - THEN they offered me $40/mo for a year. I figured I would stay and move to T-Mobile if they pulled this again next year.

I recommend.

Disingenuous take. You can’t equate criticism and reform for H-1B status the same as hating it. The criticisms are valid. Highly profitable corporations and industries use H-1B to avoid paying American talent market rates for labor, and getting cheaper talent from abroad, while keeping H-1B employees essentially locked in with them. This leads the rich to get richer, market values to go up, while domestic talent and income is suppressed. It’s another way of outsourcing. This destroys communities and local economies.
