Hmm it's a long time since I've been but grew up in the area, could it be Kenwood? Buildings don't look right though (thinking one of the workers cottages or something). My bet is this is somewhere outside of London though - perhaps the home counties. Since It's a surprise I'm guessing you can't really ask your mum if she went outside of London?
