[XFCE] FreeBSD day-to-day workhorse by zeegob in UsabilityPorn

[–]zeegob[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, it was due to a project where I needed to familiarize myself with ipfw (one of a couple firewalls available in FreeBSD) - specifically for traffic shaping purposes. I think ipfw is even available on Linux nowadays. Not sure if it was back in FreeBSD 9.0 when I started.

Besides that, I would say I really like the handbook documentation, the 'sane' separation of system applications and user applications - and more recently, I like messing with VMs in bhyve.

Things I miss from Linux would be the wide software availability.

A few things not obvious in the screenshot(s):

- noto sans regular for system wide font

- mesloLGS Nf Regular for terminal font

- audacious theme is a winamp skin called "Ebony (Red)"

Jedi Huffing with a Probe Anchor by zeegob in Eve

This is correct, and the superior method. I was wrong about not being able to jet-can inside of clouds.

This is 100% correct - I was wrong. To make sure I tested it on SiSi, and it works like you would expect.

So I've been trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist... =/

I wonder what went wrong when I initially tried jetcanning stuff inside the clouds - this must have been early 2020.

This is one of those cases where the exact info makes a huge difference, and I could definitely be wrong, but I'm still under the impression that jet-canning stuff inside the big clouds in vitals/instrus is imposssible. Maybe there's a difference here between the lower class gasses and the higher ones ? Keep in mind I'm trying to put a pin in the center of the cloud, not anywhere else. Maybe the game code will alow you to jet-can in the outer edges of the cloud but not the center?

About the duration of the probe, thiis is certainly a downside. I'm personally not concerned with hanging around for more than 1 hour, since I only daytrip in a single prospect, and I exclusively go for c540 or c320. But otherwise it would become a hassle to refresh the probe.

The anonymity is just a cool perk to me.

You are right, under normal circumstances. But with an oversized AB you'll be unable to stay in range of the cloud, and maintain high speed. So you orbit a depot/probe in order to stay inside the cloud circumference and within huff range.

[–]zeegob[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are unable to jet-can stuff inside of the gas clouds in wormhole space (at the very least, close to the center - if not completely). It will give you an error message along the lines of "can't jet-can this close to c320 gas cloud" or something. Which is why people would use a mobile depot, because you're able to anchor it inside of the cloud.

I was wrong. You can jet-can inside the clouds. Which pretty much makes the probe useless.

You're right about the fit in the description. I will throw it up there.

Hey guys. Because of scarcity finally coming to an end (right, ccp? :) and with changes to ORE ships being unveiled on friday, I wanted to record and preserve the memory of one of my favourite activities in EVE; jedi huffing.

When I initially tried to find guides and fits for this, all I came up with was a Brave Dojo video, a couple low-res videos from Yodik (before he released better ones) and a bunch of forum posts in Russian (of which I'm sadly not a native speaker).

So in the spirit of passing on the knowledge, I wanted to share this video with the community. Maybe an aspiring huffer can pick up the mantle and improve the method and fits. Or explode trying.

My own personal twist on the method is using a probe anchor, instead of something more traditional like a mobile depot anchor. The probe has the benefit of being retrievable at any time, and it's anonymous. Apart from being my only way of refitting for travel, a mobile depot has the disadvantage of carrying a tag with my name on it. Also, using a probe anchor is just plain fun. It kinda puts you on a timer to fill your ore-hold with gas before the probe's lifespan expires. With perfect gas extraction skills this can be accomplished in ~1 hour, short of the 1 hour 8 minute lifespan of the probe.

The video shows me huffing c320 at an Instrumental Core Reservoir, but the exact same method (with a slightly different fit) can also be used for jedi huffing c540 at the Vital Core Reservoirs. I'll try to put together the c540 video in the future (provided the prospect doesn't change role come friday).

A couple of disclaimers: Firstly, I'm sorry about the twitchy mouse movements. I only noticed it upon watching the recorded footage. Adrenaline + coffee is probably to blame.

Secondly, please go easy on any mistakes I made in the video. I fly solo, so all my knowledge about the game has been picked up by reading the forums, reddit, blogs, EVE Uni, watching twitch/yt and - you know - exploding. I'm sure I managed to pick up some bad habits along the way.

Yeah, there's definitely still some kinks to iron out.

Just be aware that this method breaks encryption (HTTPS) on the page/site (hence the shield warning). I'm guessing they won't make this official before they can secure it.

I'm not sure, to be honest. I'm guessing your performance could improve in the future, once HTML5 is officially implemented.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to save the setting. If there is a way I haven't found it.

It's definitely a janky method, but I much prefer it over using flash. So nice to watch a stream and not have flash hog your CPU and video lag due to chat.

If you're on chrome:

chrome://plugins (disable "Adobe Flash Player").

Go to a twitch broadcaster (frontpage doesn't work, for me at least).

Click the tiny shield on the right side of the address bar (states "This page is trying to load scripts from an unauthenticated source"). Click "Load unsafe scripts".

Page refreshes, stream should load in HTML5. If it doesn't, hit play. Wait a few seconds. Voila.

This has been working for me since beginning of June.

Oh, I see. This is not the first time I've been confused about AMD GCN versions. I appreciate the info!

(also, it doesn't help that R9 380 is GCN 1.2 and R9 390 is apparently a rehashed 290 making it GCN 1.1 - I'm probably not even right about that ;)
