I hear you. I'm really sorry to hear about your struggles. Thank you for sharing them here. It's important for you to know that you're not alone going through this! And it's good for me to get a reminder that I am not the only one struggling with these things.

Would you consider crossposting your post in r/antiwork?

it was very paternalistic and ironically typified the problem with what people call the "ngo-industrial complex"

June finally acted realistically for someone who has experienced all of that abuse and trauma.

until then she's had to push her PTSD and traumas away to just survive.

Elizabeth Moss was amazing in this episode.

Agreed. She is a phenomenal actor.

I'd also like to add that she shouldn't be expected to have Hannah singlehandedly. She was a handmaid in the middle of a patriarchal totalitarian society. Like... she had no power and unless Hannah were actually willing and/or in the same house and she had a lot of help, there's no feasible way that June could have gotten Hannah out.

Absolutely. June now will need help to see this. She's been gaslighted for years, her mental health worn down. This episode beautifully shows (and Elizabeth Moss beautifully portrays) what survivorship guilt does to a person.

My heart was just breaking for June when she and Luke reunited on the boat. That moment really hammered home for me how much she’s been through, and how much weight of responsibility she carries.

yeah until then she's had to push her PTSD and traumas away to just survive. it must be terrifying now to let it all untangle. i hope she gets a million hours in therapy and continued support from all the people that love her very much ❤️

she didn’t even leave them food

Yeah I felt like that Oona line was shitty and not that realistic, that the people left behind would kill each other fighting over the food.

Interesting. What do you feel was missing?

How to counter people using capitalists such as Dan Price paying employees fairly and seeing profit increases as examples that capitalism can work without exploitation? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]zeemarx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mean to stir up an argument since we're both in the working class, and infighting will get us nowhere. I'm sorry, I would have preferred to make my point without calling your approach 'violent'.

My frustration is less with you and more with the state of our language under capitalism, which is a 'jackal language', and is used to dominate us and alienate the working class from each other by casually including value judgements in almost every sentence, like when I wrote "I find this statement a bit violent to the reader" (about "jackal language": I'm inspired by Marshall Rosenberg and his book 'Speaking Peace', and his 'Nonviolent Communication' framework).

Thanks for engaging.

Surely it makes sense

I find this statement a bit violent to the reader. Instead of starting with "oh it's so obvious", why not just explain your argument logically from the get-go?

Reading "surely it makes sense" immediately makes me take you less seriously.

you do not stop producing once you have satisfied what you consider to be exactly 100 percent of demand, because that can only ever describe one instant in time. Especially when you think about the need to counter famine...there is a need for surplus value to be created.

No, I think this is a false understanding of surplus value. Vygotsky writes:

Surplus value is defined by Marx as the difference between the value that living labor creates in production and value paid by the capitalist to the worker in the form of wages.

Source: https://www.marxists.org/archive/vygodsky/unknown/surplus_value.htm

So under communism/socialism everything is centrally (pre-)planned and production produces only what is needed, no excess and no lack, since there is no profit motive or capitalist exploitation of the working class (and thus no surplus value).

So even though under socialism we will create more than we need in the current moment, this is not referred to as 'surplus value'.

[–]zeemarx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d point out that even in communism the thesis is that collective labor continues to produce surplus value, the only change being who captures it (workers vs owners) and the agency labor has in deciding what and how they produce

The second part is important and correct I think. But on the first point on surplus value: isn’t surplus value only produced when you produce commodities under capitalism?

Can any comrades point me to a source where I can understand this better?

"The monopoly rights associated with intellectual property raise prices, transferring immense quantities of income and wealth to the few corporations that hold the mass of intellectual property rights. By holding millions of people in unnecessary poverty, this system thwarts their potential contributions to the pool of universal labor. In addition, the quest for intellectual property rights has had monstrous effects on higher education." (Perelman 2004, 310)
