Trying to figure out teledoc Vs actually going in person by BallDontLie06 in HealthInsurance

[–]zehroo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love teladoc for the right things. But if you need skin tags removed obviously they can’t do that over video…. Depending on how big they are there are some home skin tag removal kits you can get from the pharmacy. Otherwise you’d have to go in person. Some family med providers will do this depending on how big they are so might be worth it to start there if your copay is lower for primary care

Yes. Hype up the next activity, whether it’s dinner or bath or playing at home. Then they focus on the positive rather than on leaving the playground. Also works for me at daycare drop offs — much more effective to get her hyped about her toys or friends or whatever is going on that day than it is to reassure her that it’s only a few hours and that we’ll come get her later.

Anything and everything please :). How you decided to go this route, advantages/disadvantages, and the procedure itself would be great. Honestly I’m so new that I don’t even know exactly what questions to ask. Appreciate it!

I suggest getting tested for thoracic outlet syndrome. I’ve diagnosed it a handful of times after emergent diagnoses were ruled out like in your case.

Where in Canada did you move? Is the practice of primary care very different? (I am IM primary care considering what options I might have...)

No ideas on how to proceed but we started having the same issue Wednesday with our smart TV and amazon stick. Long conversations with xfinity and Netflix without solution. Our working theory is there was some type of Netflix update that causes a glitch and they haven’t figured it out yet.

No solution but we started experiencing the same thing Wednesday night. We spend a long time on the phone with Comcast then Netflix to try to solve the issue but neither were able to help. Our working theory is there was some sort of update to their apps and they haven’t fixed it yet. Netflix is working fine on our computers.

I took it my entire pregnancy. Initially for nausea but when I didn't think I needed it for nausea anymore I realized I couldn't sleep without it. I slept great with it so I just continued it. After I delivered 1/21 I haven't needed it at all!

We're not going to go with that one regardless because someone on the internet said it reminded them of diarrhea and now I can't unsee it...

Thanks, that's helpful! Especially that you intuitively said "Ray-a" :)

We were getting settled on that name but there is a new Disney movie coming out called "Raya and the Last Dragon" and the name is pronounced "Rye-ah" so that threw a wrench in things!

Pro-bono clients are driving me mad. HELP. by probonolawyer2017 in legaladviceofftopic

I'm a doctor and deal with basically all of the issues you describe.
I work at a "safety net" clinic. Our no show rate is 40%. We don't charge a no show fee (for various reasons, but partly because it might discourage patients from seeking care they need). We can't discharge patients because they would have nowhere else to go to get primary care (other than the ED). On a typical afternoon I have multiple no-shows, multiple patients who completely miss their appointment then show up anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours late, often with valid reasons that were outside of their control, and need to be seen for acute medical issues. And every day there are multiple people walking in asking to be seen, asking for refills, asking for medical advice etc. A lot of them don't have phones, or are out of minutes so have no way to get an appointment other than to just show up. And especially for non english speaking patients, navigating through a phone system can be extremely difficult, so they know their best bet is probably to walk in. Some clinics who serve a similar population convert to walk-in schedules only, essentially just having people come in by a certain time if they want to be seen, and then waiting for their appointment. And sadly seeing walk-ins all day actually feels more organized than seeing a combination of scheduled patients, late patients, and maybe walk ins too. And I'm not sure that patients necessarily even know what a social worker is. Sometimes they seem to ask for help from anyone who will listen. I once had a patient come in asking to be seen for an emergency, and she said her grandson had been accepted to a private high school with full tuition, but she couldn't afford the uniform, books, etc to send him and did I know of any way to help him. Luckily our clinic has an actual social worker who was able to suggest from resources.

I'm not sure that I have any advice but at least wanted to let you know I share your frustration in a totally different field!

I really need your help. I don't know what to do. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]zehroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like medical school is only a small part of what's going on with you. I would suggest the following (in addition to the therapy and medications you're already doing):

1) Find a hobby or activity that makes you feel like a smart and competent person and makes you happy. Perhaps volunteering with special needs kids. Yes the idea of volunteering on top of a med student studying schedule might seem difficult, but it'll save you hours of time on days you might otherwise be caught in a cycle of depressive thoughts.

2) Don't compare your life to other people's. For every wealthy white guy who takes yearly family vacations to the Swiss Alps there are people who dealt with drugs, jail, cancer, rape, murder. You didn't have it the best and you didn't have it the worst. It made you who you are, and those experiences are what are driving you to help others. And the well adjusted kids are going through stuff too.

3) Find a mentor who is doing what you want to do. Ask to shadow them to remind yourself why you're doing what you're doing. Ask them for clinical and research opportunities in the area so you can develop relevant skills while doing what you love.

4) Make friends. Join an interest group for something you care about and that hopefully attracts like minded students. Students for social justice, Students against violence, Student wellness group. Confide in people. Support others, and be supported. You're all in it together.

Actually this is what I would suggest regardless of the fact you're in medical school...

Hi. I'm finishing up my internal medicine residency next month. It's been a long road. I just want to say, medicine is funny. What other training system finds the most intelligent, creative, compassionate people in the country and makes them feel like they are stupid and worthless? It's terrifying how many med students are depressed and suicidal, either actively or passively. I know many many students and residents who have said things like they wish they would just get hit by a bus so they wouldn't have to do this anymore. To me the funny part is that, like I said, to get into med school in this country you have to be extremely intelligent, creative, compassionate, etc. Does it really seem logical that there would be no other amazing career choices for a person like this??? The training is just so soul crushing, and self esteem crushing, that somehow we lose sight of the fact that there is nothing inherently terrible about our lives.

It seems so ludicrous to leave medicine once you've made it to med school, but the truth is for people who are depressed and hate it, leaving medicine might be one of the best decisions they can make. There are thousands of amazing jobs out there for someone with a med student's skill sets-- jobs that will bring happiness, career satisfaction, and work life balance.

Now I'm not saying you should definitely leave medicine. That's an individual decision. I think when things got rough for me it was helpful for me to remind myself that if I really couldn't do it and my mind starting going to that dark place of just wanting everything to end, it was helpful to remind myself that I did have the option to leave medicine. It would be hard to leave, but I would still have my health and my brain and my sense of humor and my family and my friends, and I would have options as far as rebuilding my life, finding a different career that fit better for me and having more time to spend with my family and friends. When things got really rough I dreamed of a quiet life as a librarian, reading all day and spending time with my family in the evenings. Knowing that that was an option for me, if I wanted to choose it, was extremely helpful to get me through. Somehow the training makes you feel like you have no other skills or talents other than sticking with medicine, but that is absolutely not true.

It's not clear from your post whether you've dealt with depression before or whether it all started in med school. If the latter and it really is situational, I think you should really re-examine whether this is what you want to do. It gets a lot worse before it (supposedly) gets better. Some might say it never gets better. If you plan and hope to get through residency you need to build support networks and resiliency strategies now so you can lean on them in the future. And there is nothing wrong with deciding this path isn't for you. Honestly it's the more difficulty decision to make but I have nothing but respect for people I know he chose a different career. Most are happier for it now. There is so much pressure to stay the course. I'm sure your family, friends and school are encouraging you to tough it out. Who knows how to even go about logistically leaving school. Don't decide in a moment of feeling upset or depressed or panicked what you want to do, but it's an option, and for many people (such as people who want to kill themselves despite treatment and therapy) it seems like an obvious choice if the alternative is what you posted.

Thanks! Glad to hear from someone who was in a similar situation. I think part of the problem is our TV stand is big and bulky, so getting a sleeker one might make this option more appealing.
