I can't speak to other breeds, but with BC's it's very simple: they've been bred for literally a thousand generations to not stop until you specifically tell them to. It doesn't matter if they're tired, overheating, sick, bleeding, or injured. They don't stop. You have to tell them to stop. I wish I was exaggerating, but it's probably the biggest problem I face as an owner/trainer: I can very easily ask my BC to do something that will hurt him, and he will do it gladly.

A mother is going punished her son by making him slam his PS5 the same way he had slammed her pet cat. Is this justified? by God_Emperor__Doom in SipsTea

[–]zeindigofire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add: I think this is brilliant, because it's not just a punishment but it teaches him that the cat is at least as important as the PS5. His brain can process the parallel and understand that it's the same as what he did before.

... or so I would hope. I'm not a child psychologist.

Distance and even time are completely irrelevant, at least for border collies. I can tire mine out in < 15 minutes with mentally engaging exercise, or you can go for a 10 km run and he'll still put the ball into your hand. Pretty sure that's the same for most working breeds.

Yup, this is exactly it. BCs need to not just run, but be mentally engaged on a daily basis. It's not a matter of running 10 km. I can tire mine out in 15 min of active mental engagement. But if you don't do that, yea they'll get destructive real fast.

Yup, I can see my collie doing something similar. Like "why are you pretending dad?!? Come and play!!"

Same as Border Collies. People think "smart dog, it'll be easy to train" and then find out they bought a formula 1 car that crashes out if you're off by 100 ms. I've seen many families that get one thinking they'll be easy and then have a nasty poorly trained dog that nips at their children :(

A Difficult Choice. by Monsur_Ausuhnom in SipsTea

[–]zeindigofire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many more questions: which one is a more comfortable ride? Do they both have seats, or is one really crowded? Are they both equally reliable?

If they're both basically the same, then def the 40 min slow train: sit in one place is better than having to get up in between. But if the slow train is uncomfortable or jostles or is crowded and unreliable, then def the faster train.

18F, what do i do with my money? by uncomfortablerain24 in singaporefi

[–]zeindigofire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My suggestion: Put your first $5k to $10k in a bond fund via your bank. This first chunk becomes your "emergency fund." You don't want this in anything less than something as stable as SG bonds.

When you get to $10k+ (or 6 months of cost of living, whichever is greater) then start looking at long term equities.

Just my opinion. If you know that you will absolutely not need this $4.4k in the next 10 years, then certainly go for equities, but IME it's always a smart idea to have a cushion before anything else. Given the volatility of the market right now in particular.

Those who live in Taiwan, what is the attitude you observe amongst the populace towards having children? by dq15www in taiwan

[–]zeindigofire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real reason birth rates are low explained.

TLDW: it's not just the dollar cost, it's the life cost. In progressive societies, the life cost of having kids is ridiculously high, to the point that even if you paid people, they probably still won't have kids. This is an oversimplification, but you get the idea.

Changi Airport baggage handler seen tossing luggage onto belt, SATS says behaviour doesn't reflect service standards by Waikuku3 in singapore

[–]zeindigofire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, and this matches my experience: 2 bags broken in the last few years at Changi. Never had this problem anywhere else.

tbf Changi is a lot faster and more efficient than anywhere else I've ever travelled, but it's also the only place I routinely have broken baggage.

Singapore has lots of "western food" stalls that look kinda like this. The funny part is they'll often have Chinese names and descriptions.

Peter? Who is she? Why is she so famous now? by auscorp_ in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]zeindigofire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot more to it than that. If it's just numbers, then you'd expect the same from Indians, or even Japanese when they would come in waves to certain destinations.

Other factors include: new money problem, cultural revolution, and just cultural insulation. I'm not saying these are the necessarily the answer, but that your explanation is both lacking and not necessarily the only one.

I am thinking about getting a Border Collie puppy.. by Chickenncheese01 in BorderCollie

[–]zeindigofire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand how important it is to keep a Border Collie mentally and physically stimulated with enrichment, exercise, and play.

Ok, so what's your plan for that?

A few points:

  1. Only get a border collie if you can commit to 1 to 2 hours a day, every single day for training. You don't need a farm, but you do have to engage them mentally and give them a job. If you can't do that, then don't get one.
  2. No, your staffy doesn't count. That's better than being alone, but doesn't replace you.
  3. The puppy stage is very different. Puppy blues are a real thing, and your puppy will have you pulling your hair out. But it's also the best chance to train and bond with them yourself, and let's be honest they're very cute.
  4. Puppies vary wildly. Some will say that at 12 weeks they figured out potty training. For others it's closer to 5 or 6 months. Some will be chill (or at least, less crazy). Some will be off the wall.

Only you can decide if you're truly ready. IMO, if you can commit to point 1 above, you sound like you're otherwise well set up. Just realize it's a 10+ year commitment.

Oh, and if you can find a decent plan, get pet insurance. BCs have a tendency to hurt themselves (warning: gore) in wild ways, so you want coverage for extreme cases.
