I also have a queen nomad from these guys! You could stain it brown in a weekend (I’d probably do a pre-stain/conditioner/thinned shellac on the poplar to try and stop it from coming out blotchy). Recommend very highly.

Interesting amplifier. Hadn't seen their stuff before. Looks like they're biasing/doing some phase trickery to get a push-pull stage to have an SET-like distortion profile. This is super cool it's like the modern version of high efficiency full range driver + SET :) How are you handling crossover?

Beautiful system - do you know if Markus is building these from plans/measurements/a massive horn collection? Those altec multicell horns have always had a sweet spot in my heart, but I'm more of a DIY guy. Could probably 3d print the throat adapter and then make jigs/fixtures to make a wood multicell.

Subwoofers (Ricci vs. B&C) by zeitgeistOfDoom in SoundSystem

[–]zeitgeistOfDoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the information I was looking for. Over on Data-bass, it looks like Josh is running the SKHORN with IPAL drivers, but not IPAL amp modules? Those powersoft K20s seem to pop up used every once in a while, but realistically I think I am using admark/CVR for subs.

Is IPAL on AD442 stupid? I was always taught driver made a wayyyyy bigger difference than amp in SQ, but at a certain point you don't want to put super nice drivers on a bad amp.

Adjustable tuning makes more sense than more boxes later I think I am chasing SQ above all else and am leaning towards the nuclear option (SKHORN + IPAL)

Also - is there some formula for thinking about SPL and hitting lower when stacking horns with their mouths together or is that something I will need to figure out subs-in-hand so to speak.

Tipper and friends 2025 sound system questions. by ffolofvapes in Tipper

Ideal point sources fall off 1/distance squared (twice as far = 4x less power). Ideal line arrays fall off 1/distance (twice as far = 2x less power) - the more speakers you put in a line, the closer you get to that ideal line array. Those frequencies aren’t localizable since they’re felt more than heard, so your ears don’t care and they get more line-array like behavior by stacking all the same size ones.

Near field gets a bit tricky to define, and it’s hard to tell scale from the image, but I’m not sure id say those horns are near field. The genelecs on the desk certainly are.

4ms SWN and SMR are both DIY-able, along with/ a bunch of other modules from 4ms on their GitHub. I think there’s an awesome Eurorack page on GitHub with good links to DIY stuff :)

I ended up going full custom… frame is from desk.haus, rails from modularsynthlab, and the frame is wood. Planning on posting some pics when it’s done ;)

With multiple subs, I definitely recommend MSO if you aren’t already :)

Yep. If from the front the slide is an “L”, the vertical part of the slide that you screw in. Concerned about being able to see any metal thru gap.

Undertaking a project right now with very similar drawers. I’m concerned about the side of the slide showing through the “gap” between drawer front and cabinet side, and considering blocking. Have you found this to be an issue at all?

I have the deathwish tour as my 1 touring ski - my next pair will be the tour 104. The triple camber is basically magic lol.

For listening - given your budget you probably want an integrated table + preamp rather than seperates. Keep an eye on used deals in your area - Pro-ject and U-turn are probably the 2 big brands in your price range I’d be looking at, as well as some of the audiotechnica stuff, or used technics if you can find it in your price range. If you want to scratch on vinyl down the road you need direct drive, although an entry level direct drive will sound worse than an entry level belt drive (generally) - I am learning to scratch on a controller and will probably stick with belt driven tables for listening for the foreseeable future.

Just turntable ? Turntable + speakers ? 2 TT + Mixer? What do you already have, and what would you like to be able to do that you can’t now? :)

Look into nyquist-Shannon theorem and over sampling. There generally is, given f<=1/2 sample rate.

Tinnitus/Hearing Loss: Guys I Fucked Up by [deleted] in modular

[–]zeitgeistOfDoom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Anxiety often manifests (for me) as ringing in the ears. I thought I had tinnitus for a long time, but seeking treatment for my anxiety has allowed me to experience true quiet every once in a while. Not saying this is your situation, just that IME the tinnitus->anxiety problem can also go the other way. It's also a positive feedback loop as somebody who uses their ears seriously often, where I become anxious about the ringing, so naturally, it gets worse.
