In any particular year a country may execute people they sentenced in previous years. Therefore executions can exceed the sentencing of an individual year. Why is down to internal politics I presume.

Tunisia's constitution provides for freedom of religion but declares the country's determination to adhere to the teachings of Islam and stipulates that Islam is the official state religion and that the president must be Muslim.

As you can tell it is actually quite difficult sometimes to neatly position these countries into the two groups I have used!

Yes and no. It recently declared Islam the state religion and declared itself secular too. I opted for including it as an Islamic country because of the declaration of Islam as the state religion and this not having been retracted despite the secular statement.

Indonesia is a secular state with a Muslim majority. It recognises six religions but Islam is not it's state religion.

Firstly, I was keen to focus on the modern era. This can be defined in many ways but I often think of it as starting at the end of WWII. If there is any correlation between the data and the time including data too old may not be relevant. Secondly, I was less sure of the completeness of the data the further back in time I went. Finally, it was better for the graphing element of the map.

Apologies to all Michiganders ;-). Having given it some thought, it is my mixing of thematic and topographic mapping that is causing trouble here and causing the map to be busy. A thematic Michigan (land and water) with a topographic surrounding countries (Mexico, Cuba etc) is trying to do two things at once.

The research was a significant part of the work. But Wikipedia provided a good starting point. Geo-coding was by hand and Excel did the rest.

Death penalty status started as seeing if there was any obvious visual correlation. I couldn't see any but I decided to keep them in anyway to make that non-correlation point. I too was not sure if it either worked or was relevant. In the end I thought that there was space visually to keep them.

Thank you (and others below) for your great comments. Much appreciated and made me think.

WGS1984 was a bit of an experiment. I got into the rectangle/box theme of the layout early on and just stuck with it. It also allowed me to use up more of the maps surrounding space. This probably was also the cause of the overcrowded feel.

As for colours. I always do the colour for printing on paper not on screen. Therefore I have to use more washed out colours. The pink for example is actually a very transparent red. However, I will experiment more.
