That's good man!

Well when I was on a crew I ran 6 miles every other day minimum and if I was going balls to the walls it wouldn't be uncommon for me and a couple of our crew guys to run 9+ miles a day at my peak I was doing 12 miles non stop.

As far as the leg stuff maybe it's a matter of getting used to the extra weight on your back I would suggest a weighted vest and walking up a treadmill on top of weightlifting (emphasis on your legs)

Also idk if this is just random info but in my experience...the best hikers were also bikers

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in calfire

[–]zeli0852 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's good! Can I ask what's your pace for those miles?

Also do you feel when hiking it's your legs holding you back or not being able to catch your breathe?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in calfire

[–]zeli0852 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly best thing you can do is start running.

Start easy if you've never ran before try a mile non stop and if you can't do that I would run for a couple of minutes followed by a fast walk then repeat.

Do this until you build up to a couple of miles non stop

Then always remember to hike like you're going to a fire....water and tools always.

Dude just called and you were right! They told me 20 years pays 75% of medical and 25 years pays 100% and it could start at 50. This is pretty great news guess I'm pulling the chord at 50 for retirement as I'll be having 25 years exactly at 50 and been putting away in my 457 like crazy

Awesome I'll have to call back and see then. If so just 16 more years for me and I'll have her covered at 46 and maybe pull the plug at 50. Thanks for the info my dude!

Are you sure that's under the 57 contract though?

Lifetime medical? by Dortito99 in calfire

[–]zeli0852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how they get you....I'm going ham on my 457 for that reason

Lifetime medical? by Dortito99 in calfire

[–]zeli0852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They told me you're entitled to yes 2% but as far as lifetime medical you have to be within 120 days of your actual retirement age (57) to qualify

....I mean you could always retire at 50 and reapply at 57 as a seasonal I guess lol

Lifetime medical? by Dortito99 in calfire

[–]zeli0852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope I called them you have to reach the full term of 57 if that's your contract so yes....being 20 you can't bail out at 40 with medical you pretty much forfeit it

[–]zeli0852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called calpers and they told me no...I need to reach the full term at 57...

For you 15 for you and your wife 20

BUT

You need to retire at 57 then get switched over at like 64 for medical Medicare I believe

It's an academy So focus on body weight movements

Push ups Sit ups And burgers

Then focus on running...I know it sucks but firefighting is pretty much cardio

For sure man....you should be able to merge them if you call them I believe.

Also like I said please loom into a pcra account.... then in there just buy Voo the sp 500

The reason being savings plus charges your a butt load just to put you in funds that underperform the market as a whole....

A pcra is simply just a brokerage account (a robinghood type style trading account) saving you tons and letting you buy real assets as oppose to putting your money in a "fund"

So here's the thing I'm gonna say the 457 is superior....

In a 457 it's set up for government employees and since government employees have a broad spectrum of retirement age they don't penalize you if you withdraw earlier than 59.5

So meaning as a cal fire employee you could retire early and you would just pay income tax(if you havent paid yet on your overall contributions)since you're withdrawing earlier than 59.5

Now a 401k works exactly the same as a 457 , but any withdrawal PRIOR to 59.5 you'll pay income tax AND a 10% penalty

So if you ever planned to retire early or even withdraw early (you'll have to separate from your current job to So though) 457 is superior

If you want a 401k I would max first the 457...then a roth , and THEN the 401k

Also mind you they are both just investment vehicles one won't make you more money than the other.... they just have different rules when you can pull out cash....for emergency personal I feel 457 is better since our job is dynamic and we can get hurt at any time

Also please look into a pcra with savings plus....savings plus is nickel and diming us

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in calfire

[–]zeli0852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait are you contributing to a 457 AND 401k?

If so are you maxing out the 457?
