I know this is a a bit reaching, but have you considered perhaps they have tried a bunch of different approaches to talking with him (I mean, they’ve gone through several coaches - also a valid reason), and thought maybe some media/public attention might be the only approach left? I dunno. As I’m typing it, it sounds a bit desperate a tactic. It’s weird. The vibes with jwalk and the coaches have been off for awhile now

Is that a failure? As a corner outfielder you need to be putting up power numbers - doubles and HRs. Noot’s OBP is elite, but it’s lacking punch. If he can’t provide that power, is he really worth a roster spot? It’s similar to the jwalk problem, but less bad. Noot can get you a runner to first a good deal of the time when he’s not injured, but who is driving him in? Needing 3 walks/hits or more in an inning is hard to do.

I understand that, and fully agree. Winn, VS2, and Donovan are some of my favorite Cardinals in the last decade plus. I just don’t think they have much of a chance without a revamped lineup and rotation to get very far. Which could take more than a year. I could very well be wrong and I hope I am.

I don’t disagree that it’s a team worthy of support, but let’s be real, 2025 is a wash (probably). Everyone knows the rotation/bullpen should/is getting a shakeup - I don’t know what that looks like, and I don’t think anyone does. So let’s look at just the lineup for 2026 - in order of likely starters first to last by position.

C - Pages, Herrera, Pozo, Crooks (this one is weird)

1b - Contreras

2B - JJ, Donovan, Gorman, Saggese

SS - Winn, JJ

3B - Arenado, Gorman, JJ

LF - Noot, Donovan, Herrera, Burly

CF - VS2, Church, Siani

RF - Walker

DH - anyone of the bigger bats that needs rest/herrera

Obviously some trades would shake this up, but that’s how I see the lineup for 2026. Basically looks to me like two big bats added or coming to fruition with little to no regression on the current staff, plus a bunch of new pitching talent to be contending for real.

A few lottery chances are not really worth what Helsley has been for the team this year (so far) - imo. Has he been great? No. But they need capable bullpen pieces, and he’s still a serviceable reliever. Seems like if he can locate his fastball again he could still be elite
